http://www.razerzone.com/osvr-hacker-dev-kit . I will have to save for about six months so by that time the software should be more optimised and user friendly. I think it's way beyond my computing capabilities at the moment to tinker at that level, although I have surprised myself in the past. What I like about this HMD (should it all work out that is) is that it's modular and designed so that components can be swapped out as and when. Hopefully, should it be a success, it could keep up with technology and be upgraded whenever necessary.
One of the advantages of having a gaming wife (not to mention 22-years of total mega-bliss) is that whenever I don't need something, but it's still capable, I recycle it to her. She's more of a console gamer, so less of a PC gamer, so she gets the latest consoles while I get the latest GPUs.
So whenever I pull the trigger on a GTX 1080 Ti or whatever, she gets the GTX 980 Ti.

She's not into playing Elite, but she loves watching me sometimes. As she jokes, "too many buttons." So whenever Frontier gets the co-pilot/fighter pilot stuff done for co-op, she'll join me. I expect that in season 3, probably about the same time the GTX 1080 Ti (or whatever will be 1-up on the GTX 1080) gets its first discounts.
BTW, here are my three (3) gaming systems at home ...
My Windows/SteamOS "Shelf-top Rectangle" (8x9.5x16" - CoolerMaster Elite 120)
- i7-4790K quad-4.0GHz + 16GiB DDR3 + GTX 980 Ti 6GiB GDDR5 + 1TB NAND (C:) 4x4TB platter RAID-5 (D:)
Backup/Wife's Windows "Set-Top Cube" (7x9x11" - SilverStone SG05)
- i5-4590K quad-3.3GHz + 16GiB DDR3 + GTX 970 4GiB GDDR5 (ITX) + 240GB NAND (C:) 2x1TB+8GB hybrid RAID-1 (D:)
Living Room SteamOS "Set-Top Cube" (7x9x11" - SilverStone SG05)
- i5-2500K quad-3.3GHz + 16GiB DDR3 + GTX 660 Ti 2GiB GDDR5 + 240GB NAND (C:) 1TB+8GB hybrid (D:)
I have three (3) unused GPUs now: GTX 560 Ti 1GiB GDDR5, GTX 660 Ti 2GiB GDDR5 and GTX 970 4GiB GDDR5
BTW, My productivity/work systems are all off-lease ($300-500/each) Dell Precision m4600/4700 15.6 1080p "workstation notebooks" with i7 quad-core (4c/8t), 32GiB DDR3 (I run lots of VMs) and nVidia Quadro GPUs 2GiB DDR3, and mSATA NAND + 2.5" hybrid platter+NAND drives. I actually have four (4), one physically damaged (broken strap caused drop, but still works, even panel),two (2) in use, and one (1) spare.
Not sure where my post fits with yours
My apologies for not noting my context from earlier in the thread ...Some people were critical for me buying a GTX 980 Ti for $500 in April.
My "fall back" is that it will be recycled to my wife whenever I do finally upgrade.
Until then, I'm getting a lot of use out of it, and can wait on reviews, more options and discounts on the 1000 series.

At least my last [partner had a go at ED so fair play to her. Anyway we liked most of the same music and that's really important to me. Being single has it's advantages such as PC in the living room and such like
We're PC's everywhere, but the bedroom, although she has one of her consoles there too.

Yeah, but the Internet doesn't fart "another brand you cannot stand" at the most inopportune time.
A test of true love is the automated car wash starting just as your wife rips one ... especially in a 2-seater with far less air volume.
