Anyway, it was the first time I really looked at ED in VR for a couple weeks. In my initial impression, I was pretty disappointed at the dusty appearing layer, really noticing the pixels (SDE), and the limited FOV/scuba mask effect. I didn't remember it looking so "bad". So I thought I'd try it again on my 32" 1440p monitor for the first time in 2 months. That was really surprising. Sure, things looked sharper and weren't blurry around the edges, and text was easier to read, but everything looked so damn small. Even stations from a distance at night had that same shimmering effect that you see in VR, but it was because they were so small on the monitor that there were still aliasing problems. And trying to tailgate a patrol ship, granted w/o head tracking, was just a PITA and felt so wrong to try and get really close. And everything looked so flat and bleh. And seeing the desk and wall and computer and crap on my desk - just terrible.
It's hard to believe people go back to monitors after VR and say they prefer it because of the sharper graphics and what not. Getting the TrackIR working may have helped my impression, but I really don't see every playing this game in anything but VR ever again. And I think I'll do the same for other games. Like I never played Fallout 4, but there's supposed to be a VR version next year, and I think maybe I'll give it a go. I mean, sure VR has some limitations, but it is still so much better than flat, little (no matter how big or how many there are) monitors.
Hell, I may become a gamer again yet - because of VR.
