Re: Anamorphic, high refresh rates and G-sync ... or just VR it?

Darr Valen wrote:Well I went through the "what to get" debate way back at the start of the year. I'm not getting VR Gen 1, and the 1xxx/4xx GPU are junk partial-improvement generations..So realistically, 4K/60 is not doable unless I want to upgrade my GPU again next year to keep playing new games.

Well, 2K (1080p) scales up perfect to 4K to 1:2, and 1.3K (720p) scales up to 4K a perfect 1:3. That's why I love 4K as an all-around resolution.

I don't recommend 4K for the Windows desktop, not even Windows 10 which I've not got some extensive experience with now. I cannot believe Microsoft is still shipping a lot of legacy bitmaps, and cannot scale beyond 150% without it looking like crap.

Darr Valen wrote:So that leaves me with the practical upgrade, which is either 1440p with a high refresh rate,

I almost invested in a G-sync, but then started looking at the deeper specs. So I went into hold mode. That said ...

2.5K (1440p) at 28" is very usable in Windows, and 1.3K (720p) scales up to 2.5K a perfect 1:2. So if you have a game that really tests the CPU, dropping it to 720p works, especially with lots of anti-aliasing. In many cases, if you're on a lower spec GPU, but running with a 144Hz G-sync, you're going to want to drop to 720p any way.

I run my 28" 4K monitors at 2.5K in Windows 7, 8 and, now, 10 for desktop. Yeah, it's not perfect as it's 2:3 upscale. But at 4K, it's very difficult to notice, unless you really have a cheap, Korean panel. My Samsung branded ones work quite well.

Darr Valen wrote:of anamorphic widescreen in a larger size, but still 1440p, which is still in the realm of 2K performance targets. I get that 21:9 isn't something that is overly supported now, and it sometimes takes res hacks to get it working.

Just remember that a 29" or 34" 21:9 is "much smaller" when you push a 16:9 aspect through it. I cannot remember off the top of my head, but it's like ~24" and ~28" 'equivalent,' respectively.

And yes, as an American, I tire of US Customary being used on monitors too. They should list mm, and put US Customary in parenthesis. I mean, even 23.5" is really 600mm. And most 24" are really not 24" viewable, as they are really 600mm too.

Darr Valen wrote: It's just one of the things I am considering. Probably between the Asus Gsync 27" 2560x1440p monitor that's 144Hz or something, I forget exactly, or the 34" 21:9 screen from either Asus or Acer, both are arguably the same overall.

It wouldn't surprise me if they are the exact same panel. Asus no longer fabs anything for themselves, and Acer-Gateway varies. They are whitebox OEMs, Asus no longer having their own ODM (Pegatron is now ASRock).

Darr Valen wrote:I might end up keeping 1080 for another year as a monitor, who knows. 4K/60 isn't realistic, and VR isn't in Gen 2, which I feel I need to spend the price for it. I know what 100hz+ looks like, and I know what 1440/1600p looks like. Neither is a real gamble, but is an improvement.
I'm waiting for Gen2 HTC Vive for my wife.

But at $599, the Gen1 Oculus Rift was well worth it for me, versus getting a new monitor.

Darr Valen wrote:Anywhop, only 3,859.96LY to Jaques Station.

If I had a bigger jump range and other improvements, I'd be doing it. But for now, I'm only 500ly out.

I think the 3x component resources is too far in our favor ...

Postby thebs » Fri Jul 29, 2016 2:10 pm

I was surprised they went 3x in 2.1.05. I would have done no more than 2x.

I'm 500ly out, and found a system where one planet is 0.7% Polonium (2.04G) and another is 1.2% Yttrium (0.03G). After 90 minutes on the former, I found five (5) Polonium. And 45 minutes on the latter netted two (2) Yttrium. This means I actually have fifteen (15) and six (6), respectively. Arsenic, Cadium, Nobium and other things are totally not an issue any more as well, as i'm 30+ each.

With only a thousand (1,000) that can be carried, I had to drop Sulfur and other things, keeping myself down to only 40-50. I'd rather see Frontier allow you to only keep 400 or so, and then have to put things into cargo. That would be more realistic, while giving one unlimited ... at the expense of cargo. But I'm sure that would be a lot of added coding.

In any case, I'm aiming for at least 2M exploration data, to see if I can get Farseeker up beyond my current Level 3 / 62% to Level 4, and find out how much is left for Level 5. I have enough Polonium for 7 rolls now, but coincidentally, only enough of some ship components to make 2 rolls. Funny how that works.

292.60LY to Jaques.

I more than likely will end up with a 27-32" 1440p monitor with a high refresh rate. I'd prefer a gsync/freesync module so that I can have varying frame rates without being locked to 60.

The Occulus is/was just too much for what it is, which is a partial system. If it was the more reasonable $450 with HMD only, fine, I'd have bought it that morning. But it wasn't, and $599 is too much for what it is, or more aptly, isn't.

My ideal screen would be a curved 34" 21:9 screen that functions at 1440p or higher, as I love the immersion that you start getting with curved/ultrawide screens.

I know plenty might call curved a gimmick, but I enjoy it. It does add something when viewing. My JS9000's curve is subtle, but it does change how you view things. It's not as curved as it could be.. but I think it improves over a flat LCD panel.

I'm aware of the horrible state of windows scaling. It's one of the reasons I'm not UHD'ing this year on PC. 2106 is the year of UHD on tv, 2017 for PC. though I got my UHD in 2015.. regardless.

One reason I most likely won't do a thing to my screen or system this year, is because of the laughable email nvidia sent me trying to get me to upgrade my 780.

Did you know, the 1080 is a whopping 1.7 times faster? That's a pisspoor increase for a card that is barely hitting 92FPS in a game released this year. It's already old.

544 Tonnes delivered. Geez.. I need a break.. especially considering I just found out I can't repair and restock at Jaques. Wow, 22000LY back.. :o

Getting real tired of hunting for RNGineer stuff. This pharmaceutical Isolators are a pain in the butt. Had much better luck with UAs.
Going to level up with Palin, then probably head out to Jaques, if the CG is still likely to be on when I get there. Lady Jayne has only 21.9ly jump when not loaded. So this is going to take some time.

Have fun, fly safe. o7

I'll trade places with you. I wish I was back in the bubble. Pretty exhausted at this point.

Oh well, only direction left is forward. 924 Jumps to HR 5791. Closest place with a Cuboid/L Type Landing Pad on my path home.. Or I might divert to 17 Draconis.
If anyone can suggest a closer stop, I'd appreciate it.

Does that rate apply to orbital mining, too? Right before my trip out of the bubble I already had to drop things like sulphur, iron and so on once each hour, because i collected over 100 per hours with the limpets. I hope it doesnt get worse...

Maybe it's a good plan to continue exploring... I've reached my planned system about 4,4 kLYs away from sol. I think i will go for the 5 kLYs for Palin (which is not known to me right now).
