Hehe I do want a HOTAS, but I would like it to be Warthog. It's pricey and could use pedals too for yaw which means even more money spent, but I understand that the thing is built like a tank and I'd like my stick to feel good and have some weight on it so it won't slide all over the table.

I'm afraid that the cheaper ones feel like toys too much and won't stay on one place on the table. And I've heard about some software issues. And if I'm not happy with it, then it's all wasted money which I could have put into the Warthog..

If I had a place to go where I could have my hands on them, it would help a lot, but I don't so I pretty much have to aim for the top model to begin with. That brings me to another worry.. What if after a few weeks I'm not interested in Elite anymore, then I have a very expensive HOTAS sitting on my desk for nothing, as at the moment I can't think of another game I play that could use it.

I need to buy a lottery ticket :)

I wouldn't buy a HOTAS if all you ever plan to use it in is Elite, and you're already worried about your actual longevity of interest with the game. I owned my x52 years before I bought Elite. I use it for many other things, and have done in the past. But hands down, Elite is likely the most natural HOTAS game I've ever played. Nothing else really loaded up and just "felt right" like Elite did with the HOTAS.

If you're not into sims, and don't plan to play a lot more of Elite, Star Citizen in the future, or whatever, then it really isn't worth upgrading from a controller.

Also, the F.L.Y. 5 while being a bit gimmicky, well, it also is practical for those with space concerns.
I think this will be a perfect travel stick, if size/space is of some concern.

I agree with Loriath. The Fly 5 is more portable agreed (I think you can dismantle it) but mine broke after my first disassemble/assemble. Returned it and got the X52

Never used it either. However, a review of the Cyborg F.L.Y. 5 from a (seemingly) Saitek X52 user ...

Best Portable Joystick- Hands Down
As far as portable joysticks go (there aren't all that many) this joystick is topnotch. It breaks down into two pieces, and the base folds up into a compact package for easy traveling! The adjustability of this stick is also second to none...whatever your hand size, seating position etc, this joystick will be able to accommodate you. The stick adjusts in about every plane, the throttle stick is located in the perfect position (if you're a righty), and the button layout is also well done, and all easily accessible by the left hand without any effort. NOTE: This is a travel joystick, the tracking, profile settings, layout and such are better than some sticks costing twice as much...that said, this is not a full HOTAS (like the x52) and doesn't have as many button combos....it does smoke both the Av8tor, and other similar formed logitech sticks...i definitely recommend!

However ...

Loriath wrote:Don't. Had one for one day. Returned it because the buttons at the top popped off. Replacement did the same. It's replacement didn't even last in the salesmans hands as he tested it in the store before I said "Refund Please". Horrid quality.
If you look at most of the other reviews, similar complaints. It's a Madcatz design (yes, I know, they own Saitek now too), so that never bodes well.

Loriath wrote:Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X. About the same price and 4000 times better quality. It can be used together or the throttle/stick separated. Little bulkier but SO much better. Built for the Long Run. Insonia (I think thats how you spell it) the FA Off Guru uses it. I used it till I tossed it off my table and broke it. (It fell when I got wrapped up in the cord and zoom it went, I didn't really toss it) It bounced around down the hallway and died. That was after a Year of Beating on it in Warthunder, CLoD and DCS World.
I have to second this. I used a Thrustmaster Hotas X for Elite, as well as Digital Combat Simulator (DCS, fka A-10 Warthog) and a few other programs, before buying my Saitek X-55. I traveled with it. I abused it. I even knocked it off a table once (oops!). It's just not quite as precise as any of the Saitek X-series sticks, although the Throttle is just fine (with limited buttons).

For US$50, and as low as US$30 on-sale, which is what I paid for it (and there was a sale on it for US$30 when I bought my X55 discounted too around Christmas), it's something you can break and not feel too bad about.

Otherwise ... hit your local department store and get a "tall" 18-30L (~US quart) plastic tote, or two (one for each component), and just keep using your existing HOTAS. It's worth the US$5-15 (your costs may vary) to buy a couple of portable, stackable plastic totes.

I would just get\keep a proper HOTAS, get a large case and a lot of tool box foam, cut that so it would otherwise fill it to securely cradle your gear, can even get a largeenough case to accomodate your laptop (I assume you will use a gaming laptop) and your other peripherals.

It might become a pretty large case but, but I would personally prefer having one larger box that contained all my wanted gear than six bags\box's for seperates.
And it will be shock\bump and as waterproof (depending on the case maybe) as you would want.

Althoug I do believe you can get very far with just a controller and voice attack.

I'm going to re-write this ...

If you have a big, massive ATX case, then this does make sense. I'll concede this because you likely have at least >>10kg (22lb), probably more like 15kg+ (33lb+), pig of an ATX computer. So getting a massive box for the computer, and then adding all the peripherals around it, makes sense. But why are you using such a massive computer if you're mobile?

If you have light, mobile, Mini-ITX computers like me ...

    SilverStone SG05 (7x9x11"/180x220x280mm) w/i7-4790K + GTX 970 4GiB, and ...
    CoolerMaster Elite 120 (8x9.5x16"/210x240x400mm) w/ i7-4790K + GTX 980 Ti 6GiB ...
They fit in a single, plastic tote. The former uses the same size as required for the X55 throttle. The X55 stick requires a taller one. So I usually get three (3) 18-29L totes "tall", which stores 100% of what I need, including a keyboard with the X55 throttle. The latter requires a longer tote, so I try to keep it at home. But in all cases, three (3) small, plastic totes holds everything of mine!

When loading and driving yourself ... it's a lot easier loading smaller, plastic boxes. Remember, each unit in its own box makes a lot of difference. Getting a big box means possibly having issues fitting.

Cheers all :) I'll be using my Surface Pro 2 (believe it or not ED:H does run on it :D) so the Hotas X looks like a good idea :D

if you are going portable there is also the question of something to carry it in. carrying it in its original box will make you look a bit silly and the box itself wont last long if its in regular use.

for travelling i would suggest getting something like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/aluminium-cas ... rays-n42bj

take the HOTAS with you to maplin to try it out or take a very careful look at the measurements before buying, if it has trays like this one you may be able to take them out (with an angle grinder) for a little more room.

you may end up spending nearly as much on the box as you do on the flight stick but in the end it will be well worth it as there will be much less chance of it being damaged in transit.

Why don't you just get a prop case from a '80s or '90s sci-fi or action movie, that has the joysticks in the case, and the screen in the top of the case.

Why no embrace your alter-villian ego.
