Elite in poor mans 3D is totally different!

Postby smartroad » Thu Feb 11, 2016 10:20 pm

So I was having a clear out and came across some anaglyph 3D glasses. Something in the back of my mind thought they might be useful so didn't throw them. Sat down to play Elite this eve and remembered that ED has an anaglyph setting! So I donned the glasses and put on my opentrack head gear and off I went.

All I can say is roll on Vive! Sure my frames per second nosedived and I had to go to medium settings but then I got a steady 40fps on a planet. I trundled around in the SRV to begin with and it is a totally different experience, even just looking at a screen. Things are just more, tangible. Turning my head and being able to watch large rocks go past beyond the SRVs cabin is just wonderful and gives a real sense of actually being there. Tried some combat in space with it, lets say it would take some getting used to! But on the surface it really adds depth (literally and figuratively!)/

Downsides, really really horrible colours! Lack of brightness so when on the dark side of a planet you can literally only see as far as the headlights. Wave scanner merges into the headlights making it hard to see (more so than normal). Eye ache from the different colour for each eye.

That said I played for about 30 minutes and sure my eyes ached somewhat but it was so worth it! I can only imagine what it must be like in a full VR headset!

Elite in 3D is amazing, im fortunate enough to have the DK2 and the sense of actually being in the environment is something that cant be explained, only shown.

Hello,
I've always wondered. If you use a DK2 how do you find the keys on your keyboard?
Although I use a HOTAS, I sometimes have to use the keys on the keyboard or even look at which button I'm pressing on my HOTAS.

Have fun, fly safe. o7

on the DK2 everything I need is on the X52-pro, though I will admit that I haven't plugged the thing in for a good few months as im waiting for frontier to move to version 1 of the SDK. the only issue I had with the Oculus was navigating the galaxy map.

I guess that is where the Vive might have a little edge with its 'tron' mode. Should make finding the keyboard possible (though I guess you might have to be able to touch type!).

I imagine a Hotas capable of having virtually all commands bound to it directly is almost a prerequisite and maybe voice attack for the rest and or macros.

I wouldn't want to play ED in VR with mouse and kb..

Rule 2: No such thing as overkill, as long as there are reloads.

I used shutter-glasses-3D and it's nice. You get a good feel of depth in your cockpit.
Playing with a rift is something completely different. It changes everything. You don`t pilot a framed picture of your cockpitview. Your ARE in your cockpit. HOTAS is recommended ;)

Not so much poor as impoverished. Hi-tech 3D vision, 1992 style.

Reasonably effective - if a little uncomfortable - when inserted behind the glasses. Unfortunately, everything's in shades of grey, so no telling who the bad guys are, or which side of the letterbox is safe.
