How do I transfer/migrate my files/settings from a win8.1 pc?

Postby GlobusDiablo » Sun Jan 31, 2016 11:37 am

Apparently in the shift from 8.0 to 8.1 MS have removed the option to transfer from a 8.1 pc with their "easy transfer" tool. Note that I can still transfer to my pc, but not from it.

What do people with win10 do? I tried installing that, but unknown error.

How the hell am I supposed to migrate my pc when I decide to break the bank on a pascal based powerhouse when Vive comes along? Do I have to buy third party software?

Thanks in advance

Yes.

I'm not talking about just moving all content from one hd to another (though I assume it is indeed the exact same procedure?).

In all my pc years I've been used to being able to migrate/transfer all content/settings and what not via MS built in migration tools. Latest iteration "easy transfer". But as said in previous post. This option is no longer available.

So how do people using 8.1 or 10 for that matter transfer their content/settings to a new pc?

A quick look at the MS site and it seems they have partnered with, and recommend using PCmover Express, which is free for non-commercial use.

Ive always done it manually. I just look for the config files on my old hdd, copy them and paste them into the new location in my new hdd. I never rely on migration on a pc. I run macs too where it works flawlessly, but always manually on pc. TBH I never knew ms had a migration tool. Come a long way since 3.1. Copy and paste works 100%. :)

It might not be helpfull but since win 98 I have mostly kept a dedicated drive for just os.

All other files are stored on other drives so whenever windows would fuck itself I just grab the install disk and reformat.
I now use an ssd for os and movethe location for my documents, downloads, steam library and pictures folder etc to my storage drives.

Whenever I do need to reinstall, now I just reformat the ssd. Install and point the libraries to my storage drives and everything is right where I keep them.

Yes I have to reinstall programs etc but barring 300 windows updates I can be back gaming or productive in less than 30 minutes.

Backup software is probably gotten a lot better but I find all of them to mostly increase problems and issues that backing up windows also mean backing up all registry bugs etc.

When building a new pc the same pretty much goes. I setup Os.
Then plug in my old drives or if I'm keeping my old computer transfer them over network.
I personally find these so called tools just a bug ridden messy way to move files around.
But then again I have always been a bit eccentric with my file trees so what settings used by default are useless for me.

Thanks Xebeth. You were the only one of these tech nuts who actually answered my question instead of presenting me with a bazzillion more! :D

Ok. So third party free software. Thanks.

Stumbled upon this as well:

If anyone has pros or cons on these two utilities, please let me know. Slowly preparing for the big HTC Vive blow out. ;) It is looking/sounding outrageously sweet (and expensive, pc upgrade included...)

Edit: Keep it coming all you techheads. I may not have a clue what you're on about, but maybe I'll learn something along the way.

I said maybe...
