I just recalled one of the first space games I got in to, which is a neat little game called Darkstar One, by Ascaron. It had trading stuff and whatnot as well, and was a rather interestingly made space game. I got it for free from some guy, and I enjoyed what little I did play of it.

I think I only got to the part where the main alien enemy was introduced, and then something happened that caused my safe file to reset, and I never played it that much again.

Agreed. I loved Freelancer. Couldn't abide Darkstar 1 and the latest X game (Rebirth) for the same reason. You only fly ONE ship. Sure you can get fancy upgrades and such but I find that kind of boring being limited in such a way.
The whole flying the single ship thing was kinda boring, but I was pretty impressed with the whole upgrade system for the ship. I really like games that have a visual improvement of your character or vehicle or whatever as you upgrade it. It's something I hope FDev does some time with ED, at least to some minor degree.
