Asp Explorer questions

Postby dreamreaper » Wed Oct 28, 2015 2:12 pm

So about a week ago, I decided to sell off my Cobra and move onto the Asp since it had twice the cargo and I was mainly doing trading and bulletin board stuff. My dilemma now is, I am getting kind of tired of trading/bounty board stuff and would like to try out something else. Was considering Bounty Hunting, but I have absolutely NO experience in combat for a flight sim.

Would kitting out the Asp be something thats doable for this and not discourage someone new and trying to learn or would buying something like the Vulture be the way to go?

This is what I was thinking of doing to the Asp for combat. Would that work? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated or what route to take to learn.

Thanks all and be safe out there!!

I use my ASP to NPC fight pretty much anything, and it can hold its own. My ASP is A-Rated across the board, with 6A shields and two 0A Shield Boosters. I keep one SCB on hand, a B rated one for an extra charge. For weapons I use two small beam lasers, and then the rest are multi-cannons. The small beams do a good job taking down shields, and then I blast away with multi-cannons to shred hulls. Works well.

But in order to use an ASP effectively you will really need to make sure you know how to run your pips.

I still use my ASP once in a while, but lately I have been really enjoying my FAS and FGS.

That's a lot of lasers. I don't think you can fire all 6 at once - or not for very long at least. I remember liking fixed beams to take down shields fast at distance and gimbaled multi-cannons for the hull up close. But with 6 hard points you can play with weapon combinations for a long time. It's been too long for me to remember what worked best. I think I may have ended up with all lasers, using fixed beams for shields and gimbaled pulses for hull and sub-modules. I'd definitely A-rate her when you get the credits.

You may want to check out coriolis.io for your power management needs.

Actually, just looked and power management doesn't look like a problem with the Asp. I used to love the point defense turret shooting down missiles, but they seem to bounce off shields now so I might go with a second shield booster instead.
It's time to give this another go.

The Asp is not the easiest ship to take to combat, IMO. It has a lot of firepower, but its size makes it an easy target. I’m not saying it cannot be done, but make sure to keep an eye on your shields.

Once I got a Vulture, the Asp felt like it was a pig by comparison, but it was still better than a Cobra (imo, stronger with more fire power, but maybe less maneuverable). But if you want to concentrate on BH, then you can kit a Vulture for about the same money (A-rated vs A-rated), although you may need to A-rate the power plant on the Vulture now due to poor power management. Just don't plan on exploring or trading with it.
It's time to give this another go.

Well here is mine.....It's my only ship..........I use it for everything and love it........

http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/25A5A5A4A ... Multi-Role

But as you can see it costs around 38 mill......

Plus I would advise you take a Vulture into combat first...

The ASP is fine if you know what you are doing...Like using FA off and thrusters in combat.....Plus you really have to have good sense of the position of the ship that is attacking you....So you can maneuverer to present the smallest target, because as Flip says they present a big target.....

Tor.....Hold on.......Tor.......Wait a bit.....TOR will you stop fecking firing.......Ok......Tor I know a therapist that can help you....... :D My Cmdr also has small feet

Thanks a lot. By the sounds of things, my best bet is to kit out a Vulture. Simple enough, I got enough credits to do that and it dont seem like its much more than doing the Asp. Plus I will now have 2 ships.

Thanks again everyone!!

Yes the asp can kick some butt, but keep in mind that you're going to be more pf a gunboat than a fighter and plan accordingly.

Mine used two small beams and multicannons in the remaining spots, and that pretty much chewed through anything I decided to shoot at fast enough. I would really recommend that as your starting point. Seeing as you're saying you're rather new to the combat, I would suggest you gimball everything and put the beams on the lowest hardpoint because that mount can target both below and surprisingly far above the center point of your sights. The other hardpoints have plenty of overlap, but you'll notice that neither quite covers the range in front of you that the chin HP's do.

My Asp has 4 cannons and. 2 beams. Once I did CZing, and I didn't changed it back. My build is for smuggling, but take down an expert python isn't a problem. With small modifications I can BH or trade. An A6 shield gives you enough time to fight or run. Later you could downgrade it to A5, so you could upgrade electronics (better KWS, SCB, shield booster). This was my first fighter ship, before this I tried avoid battles. It's a favourite for me, I love it better than ms python.

Personally, if you don't have a lot of combat experience, I'd suggest you start with something light, cheap, and maneuverable. Your mistakes won't cost you much, and the ships are a lot more forgiving, which will help you learn.

Simply cramming an A-rated power distributer in a Sidewinder makes it into a fairly competent fighter at a budget price. Moving up from there, you can outfit a really nice Eagle for about 200k. The replacement cost on both of those is so cheap it's practically free.

Learn the basics of combat in a ship like that, and then when you move into something bigger like an Asp, you'll have a solid foundation to build from.
