Yes and no.

Win10 will know how to take better advantage of hardware that's in your PC. Also - if you have SLI / Crossfire running, windows will treat it as a single device - NOT two as it worked so far. This gives you better overall performance unlike current states where your max benefit would be an extra 40% boost.

When it comes to DX12 - it's a very different API compare to previous DX versions. It doesn't just give developers new shiny effects to play with, it also treats our GPUs differently and in conjunction with Win10 - uses them much much better so you won't have poor framerate while your GPU sits at 40-50% load.

It is said that even old GPUs up to GTX4xx series will suuport DX12. Not all effects and features though but it will work.

Basically - it's the new DX engine + new Windows that utilize hardware much better than any previous combination.

Quite happy with 8.1 (IMO the best version and I've used every one from 3.1 on), and these days relaxed about letting early adopters take at least six months to iron out the niggles.

I have 2 Win 8.1 desktops and a Mac running ED. Desktop PC 2 will get Win 10 this week but will probably hold back on my main PC for a while, depending on how things go.

I'm putting downloading the w10 ISO on my to do list.

I suspect my mobo to be hinky so have a new one sitting ready to replace it.
As most builders know replacing a mono is as much work if not more than building a comp from scratch so have been procrastinating it.

My last experience with the w 10 beta was it conpletely broke all forms of analog input (wouldn't recognize joysticks) and since I forked out for all CH gear I'd hate to loose those. I assume this has been fixed?

well ive read a couple of reviews and it will be installed but im gonna give it a month or two.
does anyone know if I was to install it and say 2 years down the line I rebuild my pc, will win 10 still be free as I registered for the free upgrade, or do you think we could get stung on that one?

my understanding is that its only free for a year but there is a workaround, download/install it, make a re-installation DVD then rollback the install to 8.1.

Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson announced that current users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the new operating system for free as long as they do so within one year of Windows 10's July 29 launch.

AFAIK, Mobius - your windows (and all other Microsoft licences) are tied to your MS account. If you log in into it, you can re-licence yourself by just removing the current valid licence from the PC you had.

You'll be given a new key which validates that installation.

So yes - if you own a previous legal version of Win7/8, and upgrade to win10 for free - you have it for the long run :)

If anyone is desperate to legalise a machine for the upgrade i have a Win 7 Home Premium COA going spare, i could even post the sticker if required (once i've used a heat gun to remove it from my case).
