trading help... for a noob

Postby robfm81 » Sun May 17, 2015 9:17 am

I am staying round the sol system to get a permit - at some point, but thinking I will need to travel further for faster cash. any trade routes fairly near there I should start looking at? or RES sites that pay well?

regards,

Rob

For trade routes theres a really good tool that lets you punch in system names and wares and it will plot the best/most profitable trade route, its a website but i cant remember the name.

For RES, theres no specific place thats good, its a gamble and its all randomized. Spawns in RES are generated when you enter them, meaning if you get a bad one full of wanted sidewinders, you can just exit and reenter untill it spawns adders, pythons, clippers, etc.

Check out Thrudd's Elite Trading Tool, it lets you enter your current system and will give the best trade routes in a chosen search radius.

The permit comes from your Navy rank, so you'll get it regardless of where you are when you hit the correct rank (Midshipman). Typically the best trade routes are away from the capital system, IIRC Sol is pretty useless for trading, best to head a few tens of ly away.

there's no need to go very far, there's a RES in Jupiter's rings (yes i meant Jupiter's not Saturn's) that i blooded my Python in and did rather well there. maybe give that one a try

clivewil dude i think you need to reread the OP, Rob doesn't have a Sol permit yet ;)

if you are looking for a good pair of fed systems to rank and rep up in Uru/Patocuda is a good run, its a high tech to a ref/ag system that includes a bit of cross system trading to boost profits. the systems are 4.7 Ly apart and because of the mix of economies you can do a lot of rep/rank missions in a short space of time.

I spent some time trading in Tau Ceti a while back - it has three stations. The first and third are...Industrial, I think, but the middle one is Agcricultural so you can take missions between the two different types. The innermost Industrial one is called Ortiz Moreno Station (and is owned by the Van Maanen's Star faction so there are plenty of missions here to get you faction with them if you want a permit) and the Agricultural one is Gilmour Orbiter. I think the outer one is called Graham Terminal or something but I tended not to bother going there as its market is the same as that of Ortiz Moreno as far as I could tell. So you can take machinery and stuff from Ortiz Moreno to Gilmour and then food in the other direction and the trip takes, I dunno, thirty seconds in supercruise? It's really fast, anyway, though there is a possibility of interdiction.

You also have TZ Aietis not too far away which is High Tech and you'll often see missions in Tau Ceti asking that you go there - you can pick up Performance Enhancers or whatever and take them back to Ortiz Moreno :). And it sells a whole bunch of ships and stuff - I upgraded my original Sidewinder (which has been parked there ever since) to an Adder en route to the Cobra which I also bought there and still fly :).

One thing I noticed started happening at one point was that when I took missions that needed me to return to Ortiz Moreno Station, the orange marker on the map would instead highlight an entirely different system (really far away and downwards, think it was in Empire Space). I got confused about that and checked the system details and it turns out that place also has a station called Ortiz Moreno Station so it's telling me I need to go there, lol. Dunno why that started happening - maybe they added that station in a patch or something and the quest-destination-pointer thingy got confused because it always used to point to the one in Tau Ceti. Still, doesn't matter - just ignore that if you see it ;).

Don't stay around sol, you'll earn the permit doing missions for just about any federation faction, no matter how far from sol.

For profit I'd suggest using eddb.io (huge amount of data, automatically calculated multi-hop trading routes) or elitetradingtool.co.uk (better quality, can search more parameters). Don't be scared of jumping through many systems for profit.

Any RES can be profitable if you keep going in and out until big ships spawn. I'd suggest you stick to trading until you can at least buy & equip a viper (even better a vulture) and can confidently engage anacondas.
