I saw a news bulletin in Sol talking about a "race" from Sol to the centre of the Galaxy. I noticed in various systems that there were "checkpoints" you can fly to. Are they related to this race?

I saw a news bulletin in Sol talking about a "race" from Sol to the centre of the Galaxy. I noticed in various systems that there were "checkpoints" you can fly to. Are they related to this race?

The race is sort of unofficial - it's a player lead event, so it's not really supported by ED but they do post news about these sort of things.

The checkpoint are for 'Conflict Zones' (CZ). CZ are wars between rival factions in a system and happen when two factions are balanced between becoming the controlling faction for the system (say when they are both about 40%). When you fly into a CZ you choose a 'side' from your systems panel, the opposing side then become 'hostile', killing hostile ships award combat bonds that can be cashed in at any station in the system.

The checkpoints provide an opportunity to choose your side before directly entering the fray, as well as adding a bit of flavour to the game.

CZ do not offer the same financial rewards as say a RES, but are good for your increasing both you combat ranking and your status wit your chosen faction. They also provide an opportunity to take part in a large space battle with dozens of ships all fighting in a relatively small area (think classic sea battles of the 16th and 17th century).

That has been my one fear upgrading ships. Scared of the cockpit views. I search out Youtube Videos on the Ships I am interested in getting before I buy just to make sure I am not ending up looking out the visor of a Knights helmet when I am in the cockpit

Yeah, same here! My favorites are the various Lakon ships (Asp and T6, 7, 9) and the Vulture, because they have the cockpit at the front and the kind of helicopter view that comes from that. You certainly feel more exposed, though.

You can imagine my dismay after I bought the Hauler and realized I couldn't see jackshit from the cockpit

On topic of views.. here I am gazing at a T Tauri star. 'twas one blindingly bright sumbitch to pop next to.
