I've found the best way to scoop, rather than skimming the edge of the star, is to slowly fly towards the centre and then drop to minimum speed. I can get 60(whatever units)/sec (scoop maxes out at 75) at about 98/99% temperature. Speed is so slow that temperature barely increases at all but it's a lot easier to manage than trying to fly around the edge of the star.

There aren't any rare thingys for sale in the region I'm in (or at least, not in either of the two systems in which I currently spend most of my time ;)). There was a rare commodity of some kind for sale in my starting system (Shinrarta Dezhra, the Founders' World), but that's ages away now. I might go back there at some point. Anyway, I might risk fuel scooping at some point but for the time being I'm paranoid that I'll get a bit too crispy and generally don't want to deliberately fly into the huge burning sphere that takes up most of my screen whenever I jump into a system and has uber gravity and all that ;). I did nearly get killed by a star once, actually, - it was a white dwarf in a system I had to jump into as part of a route elsewhere (when I was making my way from Shinrarta Dezhra to Sol) and within moments of entering the system and pulling up as usual I was getting heat warnings and all sorts - had to fly toward an escape vector to not die. So that was kind of scary. I must not have pulled up enough because the star was smaller than the more orangey ones I tend to encounter :P.
Maybe this'll be a task for my old Sidewinder, if I have a space there I can stick a fuel scoop into. I'm less fussed about losing that, considering I didn't have to pay for it, and all ;).

I wouldn't like that because it takes so long to turn around after scooping. I'd also be worried about interdictions. But I also don't like the high speed skimming I always see the NPCs do. I just orient my ship so my target, next jump point or station or planet, is at the bottom of my compass. Then I go full speed to the edge of the sun, but still above the green line. When my scoop rate reaches about 50%, I throttle to zero and slow down to 30km/s. With minor adjustments while slowing down, I'm scooping at a high rate, but just hovering there, and the temperature rises to about 97-98% and holds. I can also increase speed a bit to center my target on my compass. I sometimes even scan planets while scooping. With no NPCs to worry about while exploring, I can even leave and do something else while scooping. Normally, when I'm almost topped off, I'll increase speed, sometimes increasing the scooping rate, and then head off to my target. And if I see an NPC setting up for an interdiction, it's easy to get far away enough from the sun to not take heat damage.

But to each his own. :)
It's time to give this another go.

Bit same for me, I prefer to keep speed up because only time I really am scooping is when I am doing long rare run. So I want to have speed to bug out of there at moment's notice to avoid potentially costly meeting.
