I agree with most of what's said in the article, except I DO have a problem with Ford Prefect being portrayed by an African-American actor. It's just WRONG, a pandering to political correctness & ameriKKKan mass appeal that betrays the spirit of Ford so totally it makes me sick.

I'll leave the final words with the author...

But what Disney and Garth Jennings did with the finished product is far worse that what you see here. They’ve stripped bare the soul of Hitchhiker’s Guide, leaving behind a shell of a movie that strives for greatness but can barely muster up mediocrity. Now I know how Marvin feels.

I read the article and the summary reduces it to: It's not like I imagined it when I read the book, so it's a bad film.

Chris Cummins (the author) curiously leaves out an important quote from Robbie Stamp, an executive producer of the movie, possibly because it doesn't fit his viewpoint:

"The script we shot was very much based on the last draft that Douglas wrote.... All the substantive new ideas in the movie ... are brand new Douglas ideas written especially for the movie by him.... Douglas was always up for reinventing HHGG in each of its different incarnations and he knew that working harder on some character development and some of the key relationships was an integral part of turning HHGG into a movie."

And perhaps you were unaware that Adams was far less precious about how his work was presented than the H2G2 purity police would like:

"Douglas himself is on record as saying that as far as he was concerned the only character who had to be British, indeed English, was Arthur Dent."

(Quoted from the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitch ... %28film%29)

You have evidence for a "pandering to political correctness & ameriKKKan mass appeal", or is that just a personal rant?

Having been a Guide enthusiast since the first episode of the radio series went out in 1978 (yes, it's older than Elite), owning copies of the broadcasts, the books and the film, I'm more than a little disappointed to be dismissed as not a "true fan" simply because I enjoyed the film.

I've never 'accused' anyone of anything. I'm a fan, not a prosecutor. Just not a fan of the movie. Would rather it had never been made. (Like CQC lol)

...and yes, that was just a personal rant ;)

Maybe should have been played by a Scandinavian - Fjord Prefect, anyone?

For context, I heard my first radio episode whilst on 'fire picket' duty at S.E.E. Arborfield in '79. Have them all on my moby & have listened to one or two before sleep when staying at friends on my fortnightly trips to the 'big city' (Carlisle, lol) for the last 2 years. On about my 4th run-through by now!

Funny how it's this movie which has brought out such strong feelings & not, say 'Dune' huh?

NOOOOOOoooooooo!!!!!!

The film is TERRIBLE.

The books are fantastic, and the BBC Radio 4 audio-plays are nearly as good, even the BBC TV series from the 80s is OK as far as it goes, but that abomination?

I don't care that Doug himself 'approved' it, it's a fucking abomination that should have been expunged from the lore of H2G2 as soon as a true fan saw a pre-screening.

It's just SO wrong, in SO many ways :(

Funny I feel the same way for JJ Abrams Star Trek films (all of them)! I seriously can not believe any real Trek fan thinks they are good :( Sure they are good as fun Sci-Fi action films, but not as a Star Trek film. I mean I know that the previous series/films had some hooky future science materials but really, 'red matter'?! And only a drop of this is needed to get into the middle of a planet to collapse it into a black hole?! Seriously?! Even in TNG's first film they had a torpedo that was given a real name (Trilithium - even if they had used it before in the series and it had a totally different set of properties) and an explanation of it stopping all fusion in a star. All we know about red matter is that it is red, liquid and makes planets go bye bye. And if you only need a drop of it to implode a planet WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU BE GOING AROUND IN SPACE WITH 100 LITRES OF THE STUFF?!?!?!? Star Trek (and I admit this is very much my view of it) was an Sci-Fi Adventure series, sure there was action at times (more so in the movies) but it was about the adventure of flying into the unknown and getting out of situations that arise.

Sorry, lost control a little there  hehe :D

I am now going to have to watch Star Trek TNG First Contact now though :D Which I love just for the Borg Queen!

Oh, another trekie here! TNG was the one that made me love Star Trek, the original series is too much like cowboys (and a Vulcan) in space and too retro for me, even in the 80's. The new J.J. Abrams crap is not Star Trek, it's a contraption they made and they named it Star Trek to take advantage of the fact the many people know about the franchise. I personally hate those new movies.

Does that go for the new Star Wars film too? After the last 3 films, I really have no interest in this one. It's probably just full of PC crap anyway. I figure I'll watch it eventually, just out of curiosity, but I'll not be paying to sit in a theater.

PS. I remember reading several of the Star Trek books as a kid (my father read them). I liked the TV show, but the books were so much better (as always).
It's time to give this another go.

I have one Star Trek book that deals with a plot to steal a Starship that was illegally built as a blatant warship (Can't remember the class) but I will see the new Star Wars when it is on DVD or something. I won't go to the theatre
