Federal gunship or Python

Postby Sinvious » Wed Jun 07, 2017 4:08 am

So I'm trying to decide which one of the two I want to get and looking for some advice from someone who has flown both

I think the first thing people here will ask is what do you want to use it for? The Python carries far more than the Gunship does, is more manoeuvrable, has a greater jump range and is faster than the Gunship, and IMO does it all with far more style. I am probably not a good judge of the two as I have never had a Gunship, so I am bias. However if you want a multi-purpose ship the Python wins hands down.

I think you have to have the rank of Ensign in the Federal Navy to be able to buy the ship, and I left Federation space 3% short of reaching that rank. However if your Federation rank shown in your signature is accurate, and you still have a way to go before your next rank, then you are limited to the Python anyway. But its not a bad ship to be limited too :)

I haven't updated my sig yet, I just really like the look of the Fed ships they kinda remind me of a stealth fighter. the fed gunship has a fighter bay, so how useful is it to have fighter?

I have never had a ship with a fighter bay so that is something I can't answer, but I guess the answer would be very useful depending on what you want to use the ship for? So what do you want the ship for, purely combat?

I have a Federal "Fun" ship and I love it. It is an acquired taste and you must must must put at least G3 dirty drives on it.
It has no other purpose than combat and opening up with those 7 hard points is a lot of fun. It slides around a lot so with FA of its a blast.
Also if you get a bit bored with its lumbering you can switch to the fighter for the complete opposite experience for a while.

It would be for purely combat, I have a ship for each role and need just a solid combat ship

The fgs is a worthless brick.

You would be better off in the fdl.

Personally I'm not a fan of the gunship, but I haven't spent a lot of time in one. (I don't like the FAS either, and I've spent a fair amount of time in the seat of that ship)

Since you're looking for a combat ship, the FGS could be something fun for you to try out and it will allow you to experiment with a fighter bay. I love having my SLF pilot along side me in the RES. It offers you different strategic options for taking out NPC that simply aren't available without a fighter. If you're looking for a solid combat ship but aren't in a hurry to try out SLF's, then I'd go with Tor's recommendation of the FDL. If you want a great combat ship in that size class that can do many other things, I'd get a Python in a heartbeat. After playing this game for over 2 years the Python is still one of my favorite "go to" ships for a wide variety of duties.

Remember.... buy the ship and mods at a LYR system to get the 15% discount and if you decide to sell it, sell off the modules first so that you get 100% of your money back on them and only loose the 10% on the stripped down ship.

If you do try the fgs. Or the fdl to a lesser degree.

Make sure the station selling the ship also has A rated fsd's.
First time I tried the gunship I had to strip and downgrade all modules just to get it out of the system.
It's quite possibly the ship in elite with the worst jumprange.

I've flown both ships. The FGL is a straight on combat ship. Not much good for anything else. It is definitely a fun ship and who doesn't love a fighter bay?! Down side is it's speed, jump range, and fuel tank. You will definitely need to "A" rate and the fsd, and even then it's barely passable.

The Python is more of and all-around ship that's good at everything. Also a fun ship to fly, but also much more expensive when you start trying to buy high end stuff for it.
