Avagant Glyph

Postby IndigoWyrd » Mon Feb 20, 2017 3:40 pm

Anyone seen these? https://www.avegant.com/product?_ga=1.1 ... 1487605017
I'd be overwhelmingly curious to know how well, or even if these would work with Elite.

From what I can tell, as long as there's HDMI, there's image, so that should be pretty simple. But not all devices are the same and experiences may vary.

I haven't heard of these.
From what I can see, its just like putting a monitor on your nose so it should work with Elite. Its not like VR where you can look around, just the image will move with your head.

It would have to drop its price by about 75% for me to even consider it though. $500 is alotof money for this!

From what I've gathered it does support SBS 3d for video, though I don't know if Elite supports this or not.
I wasn't considering this as a VR alternative, but as a genuine viewing alternative. As an HMD, I think this would provide a very interesting experience in its own right, and coupled with something like a TrackIR for head-tracking (Mouselook), might make for a very enjoyable experience as well.

For that price may as well go Oculus or Vive and get the full experience hehe ;)

And about HALF the resolution of the rift/vive.

And most, me included would consider the rift the absolute minimum.

I leave you with a thought/experiment.

Stretch your arm, now look at your fingernails.
Each individual pixels in the rift are about the size of your pinkie nail...

You must have some really dainty fingers or really long arms.
It's time to give this another go.

Slightly exaggerated perhaps, but with this thing it would be true ;)

But the purpose of this is not gaming, but more likely be used for movies/series etc on the go via your phone.

Got bored, so googled it again while my oatmeal cooked, and came upon this review/article.

https://www.wired.com/2016/03/review-avegant-glyph/

And yes, again, THIS IS NOT VR, doesn't try to be, and will never be, it's not even a replacement to Gear or Google cell phone based VR.
It's far more related to the to the Sony 3d viewers. If anyone remember those.
Which are seeing prices as high as $1700 for a used product...
https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing ... dition=all
And you thought the Glyph was expensive at $500 ?

So it is projecting a regular formatted screen image, not a complete FOV replacement (that negates 90% of the complexity for VR).

Also, something I hadn't figured from before, is that this isn't an LCD\OLED type screen.
It's reflective mirrors and that has a few very different benefits to OLED, at least if I assume they work somewhat like DLP chips.
The main benefit of this is pixel density, this is not about resolution, but the space between the pixels themselves, you may only have a 720p pixel display, but these should be completely free from the screen door effect.

For elite though, and quite frankly, any other reason I would much rather recommend getting a real VR headset for this kind of money, they can do all this as well using software like bigscreen, granted not on the go.
But it doesn't seem like this works without a cable either.

I think the OP knows this isn't VR but if it works the way its advertised, I'd like to give them a go as it maybe better than staring at a 7/10 inch tablet on plane journey's for example.
But as we've established, they are very very expensive for what they are
