Tip off

Postby Zaggeron » Mon Oct 03, 2016 3:57 am

So I got a tip off about a crashed ship (not alien). So I go there and search around for a while in my SRV. I finally found it.

I read you have to scan something or other, but I drove around it in my SRV for a while, but I found nothing I could scan. I then called my ship back thinking I could scan it with the ship. Flew around it ...nothing. Then some FDL shows up (NPC) and since I'm not really excited about fighting on a planet -- especially when it is 1.62G -- I bug out of there. What did I miss? If it was just some cash, I won't try to go back.

I've never had one of these myself but I saw a video of someone driving up on the ship itself to get to the data port to scan.
If you haven't already, maybe set all the filters in the navigation panel so you can see everything.

You need to use the data link scanner in the SRV to read the ships data core. If it is your mission, you have the decryption keys, so you can read the message and get the largest payout.

But yes, just money. Between 500k and 1 mil usually.

Often the data link scanner is not bound to a fire group (just like a gun, via the right hand panel), I put mine on secondary fire. Then you target the data core and press the button.

Yoy may also need to add bindings for 'Turret view' in the SRV as well, so you can move the gun turret around while the SRV is stationary.

Thanks guys. I did have all my bindings set correctly for the data link scanner, I just didn't find a place to scan. But I didn't think to drive *on* the ship. Oh well. If it was only money I missed out on, no big deal. It was fun finding the ship, though it took a while.

You have to get really close to the bridge, not necessarily on. The ones with multiple ships still only have 1 data core, on one of the ships.

If you still have the tip off, you can still get the Data Core.. :)

I think you can still scan the data core without the tip off, but it's worth about Cr200K.. IIRC

Looks like a Tip-Off mission that I had at HIP 108 .. <something or other> - crashed T9. Reported it as a bug (along with some other folks on the "Other" Forums), as there was no data core to be scanned. I gave up with the mission, as I also discovered that logging out/in whilst in the SRV meant that you materialize in the middle of the planet -

Yea, I haven't deleted the "Tip Off" so I could go back and try again. It looks like the NPC ship only spawns once your ship gets close -- I cruised around the wreck in my SRV for around 20 minutes while my ship was waiting in orbit and the FDL only showed up once I called my ship to the area -- when I landed at the coords the wreck was nowhere in sight so I took off in my rover. I only found it by scaling a large hill and seeing it off in the distance.

So it looks like I can avoid combat altogether if my ship never gets close. Good to know for future reference.

I've done several of these tip offs, but that one with a single T9 crash gas no data core. I searched exhaustively for it, and it doesn't show up on contacts list.

So far I haven't received less than 1.5M credits for a scan.

I love a good treasure hunt :-)
