Plotting Routes

Postby Myrm » Tue May 31, 2016 7:47 pm

Hi.

So I'm plotting my way to Sag A*, currently 2,700 LY out from Sol.

When plotting my route I notice that many stars in the galaxy map are connected with blue lines. I've never really taken much notice of these blue lines until now. I've noticed I can only plot a course if the system I want to go to is connected with a blue line. If I try to plot to a system that does not have one of these blue lines connected to it, then I can't plot a course there, even if the system is close by.

I'm having trouble now as it seems so few stars in the map out here are connected by blue lines.

I have my galaxy map filtered to show only KGBFOAM stars; I'm not sure if this is what my proplem is. Perhaps I need to take the filters off to show other (unscoopable) stars?

So the route planner will plot a route via a filtered star if it's required to get to the star you have plotted to. The blue lines just show the routes that are available from the star you are at. I tend to turn them off anyway as they just get in the way and clutter the map.

What is your rump range? I think this may be your issue, there are parts where the stars thin out, for example between the arms, but there are bridges that connect the arms, when you are in the map zoom out and look as the gaps between the arms, you'll see area where the stars are a bit denser, these area are easier to cross.

You'll also find that the stars are thinner the high up or lower down from the galactic plane you are.

You should in theory be able to plot up to 1000lys regardless of what filters you have on, if you can't plot to any stars going forward, then it sounds like your jump range is too small for the area you are in and you may need to head back a bit and try a different route.

It's not even like the 'r' is anywhere near the 'j', I knew the 'Carry On' brand keyboard was too good a bargain.

Hey they'll be making two more of those films soon but they'll never beat the classics no matter who they cast in them :)

Hello,
My "rump" range is 35lys and am now at the outer edge of The New Galactic arm. Having trouble reaching my final target even though it's about 700ly away. The gal map keeps giving me route plotting error. Might have to turn back soon.

Have fun, fly safe. o7

try plotting a shorter route, perhaps half the distance, or perhaps a bit of a longer one.

As indicated by Xebeth before, when you look at the galaxy map, the blue lines between stars radiating out from your current system are the routes that are plotted. If you look carefully you'll seee that there are solid klines out to your fuel range, then dashed lines for a bit after that.

A jump range of 35Ly should be more than sufficient to plot a route to Sag A*, my stripped down sidewinder "Nhilistic Nightmares" made it just over half way (15000LY) or so without problems before i had an accident with a star, and that's only got a range of 22Ly per jump.

One thing i would say to check is that you have plenty of fuel, though i doubt that's an issue for you, and watch out for the Aucocs Pocket (or as i said when i reached them "aww, cocks")

Much information can be gleaned from the frontier forums, though really the best source of inforamtion i found for route lotting was linked from this Frontier forum thread: Buckyball Racing Club presents: The A* Challenge

After posting that, and re-reading your original post it does seem to me that you might have reached the Aucocks Pocket indeed, showing only scoopable stars on your map will give a not so nice big void around you.

Try moving the map vertically about 100LY and see if you start to get a nice collection of fuel stars there (KGBFOAM as you're already aware), if you plot an economical course you shouldb e able to make it, though it might take some time.

The galaxy map is notorious among buckyballers for taking ages to actually plot a route at times, especially as you aproach the galactic core, they will pre-plan routes and there has been research on how the system works, try searching the forum thread i linked above for "magic numbers" these are important and a little esoteric, but can reduce the length of time it takes to plot a course down to seconds (in some cases it has been reported to take upwards of a couple of hours if just the wrong target star is selected for plotting a route)
