Hi from the UK

Postby Jabo » Sat Nov 15, 2014 12:31 am

Hi everyone, Jabo here, was pointed to you by another noob on your forum. A veteran of many years on military flight sims and even some of the early versions of Elite back in the days of wireframe graphics, I've been getting some stick time lately solo in ED but I'm looking forward to some multi-player action in the near future. In the meantime I still need to refine my control settings so I'm hoping there's somewhere here I can read up on what the knowledgeable people are doing and then hopefully do the same.

Greetings Commander.

There are a lot of players on these forums with more PC gaming experience than me but I'm happy to impart what I know so far about controls in the game.

I'm using:

T-Flight HOTAS X with a Madcatz wireless PS3 controller for extra inputs.

Delan Clip (3 point Infrared head mounted LED) with FaceTrackNoIR (freeware) for head tracking.

If you're used to Flight Sims then you probably already know this but in the 'Controls' settings panel, make sure you select the Axis with your analogue joystick and/or throttle and not the individual directions. For example, Select Pitch Axis with the anologue device and not the individual Pich Up/Down options or you won't be able to harness the full subtle range from your stick.

Thanks guys.

For the record I'm using an X52Pro coupled with a home-built button bay (using a Bodnar joystick emulator board) which all seems to work nicely and I've wamped up a new profile for my TrackIR too. All good so far - Man, this game's pretty.

Hi hi. I'm from the UK too.

If you're too stubborn to get a joystick or HOTAS then I can offer some advice on Keyboard and Mouse setup.

The default controls are awful for keyboard and mouse, the trick is to set them up so that they feel right and intuitive for you. To get you started, if you are using keyboard and mouse, swap roll from your mouse X axis to your A and D keys, put your thrusters on Q E R and F as appropriate, the throttler works best for me on W and S, and pitch and yaw on the mouse.

Also ensure that any controls that you must have easy access to in combat are mapped to be within easy reach of your left hand when it's in the standard WASD position. My pinky rests on shift so that's unmapped, but all the other surrounding keys are mapped to something.

Thanks for the info but I'm going to stick (if you'll excuse the pun) with my trusty x52 (knew I'd kept it for a reason - I use an FFB stick for filght sims but that's pointless in this case). Just need to work out the best options for mapping the functions. The other controls will map onto the switch box.
