Horizons on Steam - Little Confused

Postby Myrm » Wed Dec 16, 2015 7:20 pm

Hi

I see that Horizons is on Steam now as early access. I have Elite Dangerous. Is Horizons an add-on that requires ED, or is it standalone? Steam seems to say nothing about ED being required.

If it's standalone and I purchase it will I still get the same ED universe, ships, planets, economy, factions, systems etc?

Will my progress in ED be able to be used in Horizons, or is it a case of starting over?

Thank you.

I believe you can use it standalone, after all it is a superset of the normal Elite: Dangerous. Your progress should be carried on as long as you use the same Frontier account.

Yep, it is purchased as a stand alone game on Steam, but has all the features from Elite Dangerous, plus all the new content for planet landing. As long as use your Frontier login info your ships, credits, and save game will be there in Horizons when you log in as usual.

How can it be early access if it's already released via the FD store? I'm confused as to why they call it Early Access.

I suspect the name is chosen to have an excuse for the bugs. It probably takes a few weeks to get the most appalling bugs fixed.
Since they promised to have it released in December they could not call it a beta anymore. But that is just my personal opinion.

You can continue in either game.
It is one game and there is one account that you have. You can switch between playing 1.5 and 2.0 as often as you want.
The only difference is that in Horizon you have the planetary stuff and in 1.5 that is disabled.
You choose the game in your Launcher, both versions will show.

That's right and you don't really need to launch or keep ED anymore (you can delete ED to gain some disk space if you want). Horizon expand ED features in the same universe and all your progress are server side saved.

Well, I have made my first moon landing (Charon) and my first planet landing (Mercury). The SRV takes a little getting used to; seems to go haywire if you travel too fast in it.

Also got worried at one point: I landed on Charon and saved and quit the game. When I reloaded it my mothership was gone. Nowhere to be found. I searched Google, hoping it wasn't a bug, but then I found out that this is normal and that you can recall (and indeed send away) your ship. I wonder why it takes itself away.

Oh well. Really enjoying this game once again. Just getting to learn the controls after 7 months away.

Maybe not so much the bugs, but as a way of telling people that they are paying for the ED:horizons game they will have in december 2016, not just what they are getting RIGHT NOW.
