Actually - it really doesn't matter where you log off because the game will place you in a safe spot once you log back in. Staying in the orbit path of some planet or even inside asteroid fields doesn't matter.

I actually tested this myself. I logged out inside asteroid fields tons of time when I was bountyhunting. I was always placed away from the actual rocks. Also - I logged numerous times right infront of the sun! When i logged back in - my ship was VERY far away.

And yes - once you log out, your ship is removed from the game instantly. Even if someone else comes to the exact same spot - you wouldn't be visible.

I always find a nice planet to park next to before logging out. Just to help me orient myself + remind me where I am when logging back in.

Scooping fuel is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. First check the target is hot enough,
then approach slowly. Once close enough, pull out your scoop and fill her up. After you're done just
gently pull away, turn around and leave.

Always orbiting a nice planet somewhere.
Oh and shut down every module except for Life Support to let the ol' girl cool off and watch the ice forming around the edge of the window. Listen to the planet etc.etc.
Settling down like that is quite serene.

... I need to go exploring again soon :P

Just a bit of a hint because it's caught out a few others.
DO NOT... EVER, log out in an asteroid belt or planetary ring... Even when you're logged off the belt/asteroids still move and rotate, so the chance of you logging back in and your ship spawns inside of an asteroid (leading to a magnificent explosion and a buy-back screen) is pretty damned high...
Haven't done it myself, but there are many many stories of this.

I tend to log out way out away from anything, but I go through the same procedure when I log. I know there isn't a real in-game reason for it, but it just lends a little more immersion to it - shutting down the systems, cooling off the ship and cutting fuel consumption down. I use EDDiscovery, and spend 10 minutes doing trilateration of the system I end up in, so I can imagine sitting in the ship as it quiets down, doing the last bit of the checklist before going into the back of the ship to eat, sleep, and watch bad reruns.

I just want to be clear about this. My understanding is that in Eve Online, logging out does not remove your ship from the persistent universe, which means it may get attacked while you're away. In Elite, our ships are removed until we login next, correct?

Yes. However it is not immediate in some situations. I have been in a wing where one player was docked and I could see him from the landing pad. He said goodnight and I watched the Comms panel say he went offline, yet his ship stayed in view for the whole time I was in the station. I departed and went back and then his ship was gone. The system should have moved his ship into the hangar when he logged and then cleared the pad. It didn't.

Some people have reported logging off in an Asteroid field and logged in later to a rebuy screen.

Best to drop out in a clear area if you can't be in a station/outpost when you log to avoid having to claim death by asteroids while logged out support tickets :)

Just to be sure I will fly about 100 LY then come to a complete stop then drop out of supercruise.. and sometimes I will fly around a little bit away from where I dropped before logging out.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This had made many people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move. - HHGTTGImageImage

Never thought of what would happen if logged out in an planetary ring, best to avoid in any case I guess :)

That ice forming on the windshield, does it really happen? Hehe I have to try that out of interest. Even though it is still easy mode compared to real life where your cars windshield is iced up on both sides in worst case.
I play on PC, in the Mobius PVE Eurasia group.

Yep, can get the same effect by shutting down systems and popping a heat sink. Starts at about 4% heat I think, or a little more. Less than that and you are looking through the windows of a cottage on the Scottish Highlands in darkest January ;) Or in Northern Canada, if you are map challenged.

Rumours have it that in eve, you could launch a few probes, triangulate the signal and chance of dropping in on a "safe warped" ship, ive done hours and hours of scanning and forgetting probes and all I found was abandoned outposts, pirate hovels and lots of junk that needed days and days of training skills to learn how to use the items recovered
