I don't know what tests/benchmarks you have been reading but performance speaking, there are virtually no difference between the 7xx series cards and the 9xx series.
Yes I am saying a 780 performs on par with a 980.
However the 9 series uses nearly 40% less power to do it. And that is really impressive.
Less power means less heat, less heat means less need for cooling and that means less noise, or you could use it to possibly clock the card higher.
Personally I don't like overclocking, since it often leads to weird behavior for very little gain.
Sure I could boost my cpu with about 800mhz, and get 5-10 more fps in farcry 4 bit, what good does that do me when it means I bsod three times a day and the os gets corrupted.
Now the next generation of Maxwell, that is probably going to be more interesting.
Which is why I got my 960 as a stop over (replaced my 5 year old amd 6950)
Although a better card is tempting now that I got my tax returns this week...
