Hello folks, I'm about to buy a trade/multipurpose Python. Aiming of course for future further upgrades, I was nevertheless wondering if a downgraded powerplant would do the job. Something like this: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=605,5TP5T ... 205U05U2UI

Not looking for BH (for that I have my Vulture), but just an adequate defence against NPCs interdictions. I never understood if a downgraded PP would lead to major heat management issues...(or something even worse that I can't actually imagine).

thx for any advice in advance

(as usual sorry for my english, you brit lads, never studied it and trying to improve it everyday :P )

in answer to your question about the powerplant - here's a list from the Wiki giving the heat efficiency for each rating of Power Plant.

http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Power_Plant

As you can see from that list the 5A power plant has a better heat efficiency rating than most of the Class 6 and 7 ones - so I don't think you will have any problems at all :)

Here is mine:

Not exactly cheap, but it shreds shields, and makes short work of basically every NPC you will find out there.

I'm loving the python, can fight as well as my vulture in a RES - and can then go off trading without having to worry about moving ships around - it is truly the best multi-purpose ship I think.

Using 3 Class 3 Gimballed bursts and 2 Class 2 Gimballed Multi-Cannons - only use the cannons on condas and pythons - everything else dies too fast

This is my current spec - just got the thrusters to upgrade to A rating then maybe some armor upgrades.

Hi there, it's me again :)

Just cannot decide...because I don't understand fully the extensive tests that I found on the internet.

Long story short: better 6D or 5A shield generator on my python? (still a trader/multipurpose one)

I know that 5A is a little stronger in MJ (and allows to add a bigger cargo rack in place of the 6D one), but the hull mass looks not optimal for it. So perhaps may be worse...

I cannot upgrade to a better rating because I need a certain LY travel capacity for my current (and profitable) 1 jump trade route.

As usual any advice will be highly appreciated, and will be rewarded with kudos (for men) and hugs (for women). :D

If all you are doing is trading at the moment, just shove in a 5A for now - after all it's no problem to refit to a 6D if you decide to do some bounty hunting, and if your trade route is nice and profitable - more cargo space = more profit :)

I've finished upgrading mine and this is what I settled on - I use it for trading/RES/CZ - works well for all situations :)

According to Elite Dangerous Wiki...

Each ship has a base mass which is the main factor in determining how effective each shield type is. If the ship's base mass (doesn't include cargo or modules) is below the optimal then shield strength is increased by a modifier whereas if it is above optimal then the shield strength is decreased by a modifier.
A shield's capacity can be determined by the following equation

SHIELD STRENGTH = BASE SHIELD STRENGTH * MODIFIER

MODIFIER is based upon the difference between a ship's Hull Mass and a shield's Optimal Hull Mass.

Thus it can be concluded that shields have fixed stats which are modified when applied to different ships.
A table with all precalculated values can be found here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Xq2fmxhjfNiwtR2fBR1MAZrwEcjFudSuSjTOLwfcqlM/pubhtml

Based on this a 5A is stronger than a 6D, although you power distributer also has a factor to play in this (based on the fact that a 5A is stronger on an Anaconda which has a class 8 PD than a Python that has a class 7).
