I like how now some of the PvP only bods are using this as "proof" that Frontier consider Open the most important play mode and thereby justifies their calls for Nerf Solo / Block Mode Swapping etc.
The most plausible reason for it I've heard so far is that it heads off any accusations of cheating by the winning player, which is also why the Race to Elite was also Open only.

I can understand why FD is doing this: generating another income stream from an established game can bring benefits.
The fact that this news item coincides with a Vox Populi discussion (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=130872) on the relative merits/modifications of solo/open/group modes makes it difficult not to conclude that the discussion is pointless and the decision to abandon heavily modify solo, and possibly group, mode has already been made, thereby forcing everyone into open.

What they wanted was a competition between players and, like it or not, the only way to do something like this is to force it into open. The alternative is to have it happen in secret and they wanted people to notice it going on.

Remember, you have to choice to take part or not, unless like me you are 10,000 LY from where it's all going on and won't be able to get back in time.

This competition has no bearing on the rest of the game, let people waffle on with unsupported opinions in the forum. Why are FD doing this? Because nVidia has given them a shed with money in it. Literally, a money shed. Not an old lawnmower, many spiders and the decomposed body of a squirrel, money.

Granted, all points, but we all know that the perception of the truth frequently carries more weight. The timing of the questioning of the role of the playing modes (with what seems like a bias towards open) and the promotion of this competition in open only will call FD's integrity into question or their PR sense - or both. Having promoted the game on the basis that space is big - really big, it seems strange that the playing modes are brought into question through two such parochial activities. In theory it could take years to find the nVidia stash, unless it's placed near lots of other activity. How do you know you're 10 000LY from the trove?

I work for a company that recently underwent some major restructuring, so I know all about Chicken Little syndrome, one small bit of news gets misinterpreted and suddenly the sky is falling.

The article states that the items have to be bought and I am 10,000 LY from the nearest shop, unless there is a station in the Bleae Aewsy AA-A H22 nebula I don't know about.

The whole argument could be solved in a heartbeat by simply implementing a PvP flag in Open... Then there would literally be 0 reason why anyone wouldn't play it...

BUT it wouldn't stop what's happening on the forums, because then the PvP monkeys would simply complain it's still unfair because they can't blow you up in Open play when they want to and you can still play un-griefed. It's what they do. It's what they do in every game. MOBAs like LoL are basically brain poison to even look at thanks the that community, WoW is constantly being "tuned" based solely on the outcomes of PvP arenas and such leaving certain classes more often than not shortchanged in PvE...

In today's gaming enviroment 90% of the time PvP Players and Asshole/Griefer are one and the same.

Also, the secret they will never tell you... They could give two shits about your level of contribution to community goals, they just wants a larger pool of players to pick from for ganking.

With regards the PvP crowd - I remember shortly after the Kickstarter finished, someone on the forums made a prediction that the Guilds from Eve would eventually turn up and try to get the game changed to how they wanted it, ie. Open only fish in a barrel. They would employ 'squeaky wheel' tactics on the forums, present 'problems' and give solutions, have others pose as Solo only players who would be converted through the convincing arguments, all that sort of stuff. I thought, "paranoid bugger, it'll never happen".

For the past few months, looking at the forums, I'm wondering... is paranoia catching?

funnily enough, they would also be the first to leave ED when the next 'big thing' comes along.

i was hoping to stay with ED for a long time but if we keep getting forced towards open play, i'll move. open's not what i want.
