Voice Comms or Team Speak?

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Wed Mar 11, 2015 3:26 am

I saw a video of players using voice comms in 1.2 beta and it seemed to be working really well. I didn't get a chance to try it tonight, but if it's fixed, in-game, and good for up to 4 players (wing), I wonder if it might be more convenient and easier than team speak. I've never used team speak, so I have no clue about that.

At least for the casual meet and greet, where you run into someone in the same system, the in-game voice comms seems to be the way to go. But I suppose of you are trying to organize several wings, then it's not up to snuff.

Do most players even have mics?

What d'ya think?
It's time to give this another go.

I have a mic/headset that I never use often. As someone with glasses, the addition of a headset gets a little maddening. I've tried all kinds, and they all end up being bothersome somehow. Either they mash my frames into my temples and slowly give me a headache, or the ride alongside the earpiece over my ear, and rub raw spots. I can't win. LOL

Yeah, I need to use reading glasses to focus on the screen & keyboard. I have a light weigh on ear style headset, and I put the temples (very light weight wire frames) up over the top of my ears so they don't get squished between my ears & my head. The lenses are slanted, but it doesn't seem to cause a problem. That might be different with prescription lenses. I think the bigger head sets with over ear cups would be a problem. Then there are ear buds, which won't interfere with your glasses at all. You could use those and a tie clip mic on your collar and you'd be set.

A note about ear buds and talking at the same time. IMO, using the sealing type ear buds and talking at the same time is not very pleasant. It's like talking with fingers in your ears. The non-sealing, foam covered ear buds work much better and they allow your ears to breath.
It's time to give this another go.

I may have to give that a try. Right now I have a cheap logitech job that settles over the ears. Not big cups, but little padded earpieces. Still gets uncomfortable rather quickly.

I just know that if I start including them in my 'Elite gear' kit, it will make me less inclined to play. LOL. This is why y'all never see me on TS. I have it set up to hop in, but... yeah. That means digging out that insufferable headset, so... haha.

Bought a cheap USB bluetooth transceiver for my PC, along with an "in-ear" bluetooth headset. I don't know if having that thing hanging out of my ear, feeling like Lt. Uhura, is going to work well for me or not. I figured it was worth a try, if nothing else. Haha.

I was in the same boat, everything bothered my glasses (I've got the thick, square nerd kind) until I took the plunge on the Astro A50's. Not only are they badass in terms of sound quality, the ear "muffs" are super spongy and soft and dont give me the "glasses welded to side of head feel."

Woo Hoo, those look nice. 8-)
Do you use TrackIR with those? Most modern headsets seem to have too thick & wide head bands.
It's time to give this another go.

I'm actually using EDtracker instead of TrackIR. I like supporting a community that comes together to create a product for the benefit of all players instead of profit margins. :)

Recently picked up a Logitech G230 headset to replace my El-Cheapo Logitech set from 4 years ago for better comfort. I usually use Team Speak but have no issues when and if I get invited to a Wing to switch to in game voice comms.

For less than 50 Swiss Francs, this headset is a great deal. Over ear, removable earpads (replaceable as well) for cleaning, a decent mic that doesn't pic up a lot of background noise, and decent sound for the price.

Now I have to wait a couple of months before I can order an EDTracker. Blew my budget for the last 2 months on the headset, X52 Pro, and Air Display to use my iPad & iPhone as secondary displays.
