That could be a good thing. Depending on what phone it is. You could set it up with Trinus VR or the other VR programs out there. Reverse tether the phone to the PC via USB (unless you have super speed Wifi the latency will be too noticeable), put it on 'Flight Mode', stick it in a headset and viola! You got an Oculus Thrift! The phones gyroscope and other sensors can be used for the head tracking too.
I did it with a Nexus 7 (2013 model) with pretty good results and I literally know nothing except tinker tinker tinker...

To get the best aspect ratio in Elite, using side by side you need to use a custom resolution of 1920 x 2160 to 'un-squash' the image. Beefy GPU!
