Re: Crashing using new R7 260X GFX Card

Hopefully I've found a stable setup now.
I removed all of the drivers and software that came with the card (Gigabyte stuff) and now I'm only running the direct AMD drivers and the AMD Catalyst Control Centre, with the GPU clock speed reduced by 5%.

So far this seems to be hold. Strange thing is the supplier of the card asked me to run a stress test on it which seemed to give now issues at all.
That would lead me to think that the card is OK but the drivers are not. When I removed the Gigabyte stuff I stopped getting any display driver crashes.
Cheers,

Well I thought I'd update this.

Briefly, one new GFX card later and my problems are gone. New card (same type) runs cooler and quieter and give no issues at all. Must have been a hardware fault.

Well I never did update this,
Anyway in short it seems it was a duff card. After falling out with the engineer due to his poor attitude I spoke to one of his colleges.
He agreed that if I had to underclock it to get any stability from it them something was wrong.

New card supplied and no issues ever since.

In case anyone ever runs into this, I use a tool called DDU from guru3d.com...

http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/dis ... nload.html

Why do I recommend this, well because both nVidia and ATi uninstallers suck. If you ever switch your video card, even if you stay with the same manufacturer... make sure you uninstall all your drivers before changing the card. I recommend using this tool as well, it not only cleans out any residual crap that gets left over but it will also stop Windows from automatically downloading the driver from Windows update so you can manually install the one you want.

I've switched my video card out on my current gaming PC probably 5 times now since I built it, and a few of the times crap left over made for some really weird issues. Once I uninstalled and ran this cleaner my issues vanished. The tool isn't bloated, very simple to use.

Hope that helps someone.

Good to hear. Amd cards do still tend to run hot though. Ventilation is paramount.

You asked for a cabinet earlier, and this one has my highest recommendations:

I honestly find it odd that you have upgraded your gpu five times but not re installed windows.
But then again I'm old school new hardware = reformat.

But I agree entirely that the driver uninstaller does a much better job of removing gunk than the nvidia/amd installers.
Particularly needed if you have problems and want to try downgrading drivers or whatever.

From what I remember from my older amd/ati cards they tend to run hot it was certainly not unusual to temps exceeding 90c. But a bad card is a bad card.
Glad the OP got his fixed.

Thanks for this. I had trouble getting rid of old drivers too (after swapping a GT 740 for a GTX 970). Really simple to use. I like the way it restarts (after prompting) in safe mode and I particularly like that it can prevent Windows from updating drivers automatically. The settings in the software are clearly labelled to revert this too.

Sorry not been on for a while.
Cheers for that, looks a good case. Once I've got the car sorted I might look into it.
