It's weapons. Take a look at the screenshots below. And like I said - they do less damage, but they pewpew constantly even when the enemy is not in your FoV or while you're turning around.

its worth noting that if you set 'fire at will' it will shoot any ship that shows as red to you regardless of it's status. i tried them out at a nav beacon and it was an unmitigated disaster.
