It sounds like you are dropping in WAY far away from the RES. I typically drop in at 10-15km from the marker, and usually have ships spawning pretty quickly after my arrival. I approach the RES at a 90* angle from the rings, and center my ship on the marker just like I do when approaching a station. I don't know why it's dropping you in so far from the action.
As far as making money, for me the Haz-RES, working solo is a good money maker and FUN! With a KWS on my Python it's not unusual to make $2.5-4mil per hour. With a decent spawn, I'm frequently getting FAS, dropships, clippers, pythons, and 'condas. Quite often I target one right after the other. The 'condas will pay out at $200-$375k each.
You just have to be careful for wings, just like in the CNB's. I've only worked in a CNB a couple of times, so they may be as profitable but the spawns that I've had in CNB's so far have too many smaller ships and the large ships aren't plentiful like in the Haz-RES.
