Official Forums = Depressing

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Wed Aug 24, 2016 6:37 pm

I was bored, and it's been pretty dead around here, so I've been spending some time on the official forums - and now I'm depressed for the future of ED. It seems that FD just wants to make it more and more of a fantasy space arcade game. I loved Elite, going back to the Commodore 128 version, specifically because it seemed so realistic, not like all the other arcade shooters. And though I still, for the moment, love this game, it seems to be spiraling down, with more negative than positive changes. Thankfully I can ignore much of it, if I keep my head in the sand, but I'm worried they are going to make such drastic changes to the game play that I may need to find something else to do. I'm hoping I will continue to ignore the BS as they continue to introduce new things like living planets, space legs, and etc.

Otherwise, I guess I'll have to hope Star Citizen will stay on track, developing a simulation where you can be a citizen of the galaxy and play your way, not be forced into a bunch of unrealistic (unbelievable, not even in the realm of possibilities) crap like is happening with ED. And hopefully they will have figured out a way to keep players from killing others just for the lulz.
It's time to give this another go.

I can only agree, but Mobius players are equally affected.

I've spent the last couple of days trying to keep up with the 390 pages of this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthrea ... Yay-or-Nay where the pros and cons of the new features are vigorously discussed.

'Healing' lasers was bad enough, but instant ship transportation and 3D printing of on-board fighters is going a bit far. No allowance seems to be made for the logical inconsistencies that will ensue - it just seems more than a little reckless. In spite of David Braben's insistence on a scientific background to ED, the new direction seems to be more towards Dungeons and Dragons.

The magical elements mean it's no longer the game I thought I was playing.

Completely, agree. Let's hope FD manage to crawl out of the ditch before it becomes a "black-hole".

Yup, or yep, if you prefer.

I just checked the Star Citizen site and found this gem:

Fully destructible Greycat Buggies that players could drive around the zone, with the ability to run over and kill other players or destroy said buggies.

Why do they pander to player killers? They have cars today that can auto-brake for pedestrians, but in the future you can just drive through the space station and run over people just for the lulz. WTF is wrong with people these days!
It's time to give this another go.

Why do people hang around the starter systems in Vettes killing noobs?
Why do people come to Mobius on occasion and break the rules?
Why do people travel all the way to Sag A* in combat ships just to kill explorers?
Why do people hang around the Engineer bases killing people?
Why do people UA bomb popular trade destinations?

Because to world is full of dicks!

Why does FD want to change what has been basic lore of the game and introduce illogical gameplay?

I on the other hand think the 3d printing makes a whole lot of sense.
In fact it's one of the first things that kind of makes sense.

We are already at the point where we can print all kinds of complex machinery, not just in plastic but also alloys and this game is supposedly 1300 years in the future.
It makes a lot more sense than the fsd and space lasers.
it even explains current repair facilities, afms etc.

It can even be used to explain "instant ship transfer" since your ship is detail scanned at its current location, melted down into core materials, transmitted to destination as data and then printed on the other side.
The fee is then just to cover printer use, data transfer, and materials lost in the reclamation process.
Honesty it just makes too much sense.

The changes (at least IMHO) are just QoL improvements, they don't really affect core game play, and can if you wish be ignored.

The furore they have created will be forgotten a patch down the line.

There is already loads of stuff that makes no sense (get blown up, instantaneously travel thousands of light years and magically reappear in an exact copy of your ship for example), these are minor.

This is just my opinion of course.

I want ship transfer; I've wanted it for a long time now. Very useful QOL feature for those times when I move my fleet to a new home (happens every so often). Instant is fine. Some delay is also fine. What I don't want is wasting yet more time f*cking around with throwaway Hauler taxis.

If you introduce 3D-Printing of Ships and Modules why do we have to transport land enrichment systems, mineral extractors, marine equipment etc. with ships? That makes no sense.

Of course you can ignore some of these changes, but it will be used by others and can be an advantage for them.

What I like in Elite is that there is a lot of logic in it. With instant ship transfer a lot of this logic is lost.
