Good choice of ship. Cobras really are very good at most things. I keep mine for combat, while I trade in a T6.

For multi-purpose ships, your progression should go

Ship: Sidewinder-> Adder-> Viper-> Cobra-> Asp-> Clipper-> Python
cost: Free-> 87,808-> 142,931-> 379,718-> 6,661,153-> 22,295,860-> 56,978,179
cargo: 10-> 26-> 22-> 60-> 128-> 248-> 292

Each of these ships can be easily re purposed, each step increase the efficiency of whatever income stream you choose, and hence leads to the next.

Most ships outside of this progression are specialized to the point of not being useful outside of their roles.

.....well you "could" take a type 9 into combat.....

You should find yourself a system with a Resource Extraction site. You'll be making at least a million an hour.

Python - hands down. 284 cargo tons including shields. Capable of landing at outposts. Can upgrade to awesome combat machine as well.

But it's going to cost you. Fair enough. :)

I can't say I agree with Takoda. The Viper doesn't belong in that list. It's always been known as a strong combat ship. It also has a smaller cargo bay than its predecessor on the list, the Adder.

What I recommend is to keep that Cobra. Upgrade it a lot. It will serve you well until you can afford a Type-6 without selling the Cobra. Then, if you want to trade, you have a strong trade ship. If you want to do combat, you have a strong multi-role craft that can really take a beating, and is just as agile as the Viper. Perhaps not as stylish, but good in all the ways that count in a fire fight.

Also, since you have a Cobra... consider heading down to Tanmark and buying Onion Head. If you take Onion Head 150ly away from Tanmark, you can make 500,000+ credits for a load of 35 (while supplies last). This FITS in a Cobra's cargo hold. Don't forget to grab some Tanmark Tea as well. That's easily another 100,000cr on top of your Onion Head. With 600,000cr profit one way... who cares about the other direction? Not me!

I included the Viper, as the question was for multi-purpose. What the viper looses in cargo space, it more then makes up for in combat capability. The adder is not a really good fighter, but it does have cargo space far above the sidewinder.

Its for these reasons I would put the Viper as your first real multi-purpose after the sidewinder. But everyone likes to change things up, and getting out of a cockpit with ducktape holding it together was a huge motivator for me.

That being said, once you get your Cobra, you will really be cooking with gas! The Cobra is a VERY flexible craft, (I whole heartily agree) and you will find it a very comfortable ship to have for a long time.

...at least until you can afford an Asp.

Exactly. I completely stopped using my class A Cobra when I got the Asp, so I recently sold her and bought a Vulture instead.

Bought my Cobra, fitted it with the best gear I could find in the systems I visited and it's not too shabby. But wondering if I wanted to start focusing on RES BH'ing more would I be better suited to buy a Viper and pimp it out for combat? Or would a combat pimped Cobra still be better?

Combat Cobra, hands down.
