Ok Here Goes; Inspiration Anyone?

Postby Avago-Earo » Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:30 pm

I'll keep this as brief as possible but here's some background to illustrate my perspective (I hope).

I'm new to PC gaming (apart from playing on a BBC in '83, 84 Oh and I bought a PS3 a few years to play racing games but heh, it's a good blu ray player right?)

So I had a PC for recording and mixing down music (not cut and paste samples BTW just to be clear, guitars drums bass trumpets vocals. Real stuff). I loved Elite back then and in December 2013 I googled 'Elite Remake and stumbled upon the excellent open source version 'Oolite'. It was on the Oolite forums that I learned about Elite: Dangerous.

I paid into Premium Beta and bought a HOTAS. Bought a Delan Clip and sussed out curves on FaceTrackNoIR. I did my first ever PC build to play this game (not a bad build actually aside from the GPU from my old PC -pending).

So where I am now is:

I rarely play because I don't meet anyone (I'd like to for fun)
I've read up on the other iterations of Elite like Frontier First Encounters and I get the history of the Federation, Empire and Alliance (no Republic?) but I don't really care because it doesn't 'feel' relevant when I'm going to a USS that I know will appear eventually if I just wait or speed up or slow down or loop the loop in Super Cruise- ah there it is in the middle of nowhere a Black Box...

I'm kinda hoping that some members of these Forums may be able to give me a kick up the ass in the way of 'Let's do this, I'll meet you up at, and we'll try to..'

I want to play but every time I look at the 'PLAY' button it reminds me of when I pretended that I couldn't do up my shoe laces just to put off going to school for a few more minutes.

I want too feel involved. Shooting shit and selling shit isn't enough.

Thanks for listening Commanders.

Fly safe!

Yeah, I bought a PS3, mainly for a BluRay player, but also got some games that I never played. I also built a new computer just to play this game, the first I've played years and years.

Anyway, sorry I can't help you. I'm still totally fascinated and disappointed by this game. The graphics are amazing, but repetitive, and the NPCs are all morons, but I can't stop playing. I just try to immerse myself, so I always fly like I'm really out in space, park in a hanger when I quit, and I never boost just to make time.

I think what you need is the wings feature, where you are guaranteed to meet up with friends and you can go do stuff together. Hopefully they will have some proper fleet level type battles.
It's time to give this another go.

Cheers for the reply Roger Wilco Jr. Sometimes it's just good to talk. Hearing your point of view and perspective has actually inspired me to play so this thread wasn't wasted. I agree with you about the immersion bit. Maybe I'll save up (probably take two years to get the pennies at my rate) for a Oculus Rift because the immersion is where I'm at. I've just been finding it difficult to get into the spirit of things since Beta but I don't want to put a negative slant on this excellent forum with 'I'm bored...' style posts so I won't go there.

Cheers!

Truth be told, sometimes it's good to just take a break. I havent really played in two weeks. I've logged on, screwed around, and logged off. The 1.1 and 1.2 updates should add a lot to the "life" of the galaxy as well as group play and that is starting next week and next month. Hang in there commander. If you dont feel motivated, simply take a break. The good stuff is coming!

Yeah, I know what you're saying Commiekaze, but I've had a long break already. i think I've played a few hours since october because it gets me down. I subscribed to you tube channels last year (two just to be pedantic) watching the alpha testers, saved some money to get in on beta. Watched all the dev diaries and thought yeah this sounds good. All I get is a cockpit view. Nice graphics but the visuals on TV documentaries can be astounding too and I feel no less involved just watching professor brian cox pointing at a screen with a representation of a nebula forming than I do loading up elite dangerous.

What happened? This time last year I was so excited about flying around in a spaceship doing missions with people searching through wrecks etc.

Maybe I'm just greedy.

My bad.

Thanks for the communication though.

I only found out about this remake in October or November, so it's still pretty fresh to me. I find the Track IR very immersive. I don't think I'd like not being able to see my hands with the Oculus Rift, and I think it is lower res, too. When they get it very high res, and figure out a way to see your virtual hands pressing virtual buttons inside the cockpit, then I'll definitely be picking one up.
It's time to give this another go.

I think that 1.2 update will REALLY help you and people like you, as well as this Group as a whole. I am no longer in TS or play with anyone here but I think this group in general could use more "organized" events. This wasn't really happening when I was here though maybe it's different now. It is a bit harder to organize due to the limited grouping mechanics, so that Wings update will be a bit deal. Hang in there! It is coming soon.

I would second this ^^ opinion about The TrackIR. I was actually in the process of setting up a multi-screen setup to play flight/space sims on. But I discovered the TrackIR and researched it in depth. The thing that impressed me were the reviews. They all stated the same thing, "This device has completely changed my gaming experience. I can never go back to anything else. Well worth the investment."
So I decided I had to try it. And you know what? They were right! When a ship or objects pass by you it feels so natural looking around through the cockpit to watch them and adjust your flight at the same time. Having played sims on a multi-monitor setup I can tell you it doesn't compare. Flying tight circles around objects became...well, beautiful. Very immersive.
I recommend the TrackIR5 Pro. It uses a much better tech and produces a beautiful, smooth, and precise movement. However, all the reviews state that even the 'reflective' TrackIR is five star all the way!

Well, you're saying it right there my friend. Doing missions with people. The multiplayer aspects of this game are still sadly under developed. Core mechanics like basic text comms between commanders on your friendslist still don't work. So the game itself is in my opinion, in part broken, or incomplete still. Which brings us to patches/updates.

I agree with what others have written, that 1.1 and 1.2 "should" help this along. So here's hoping.

Fly safe Commander.:)

I've used Track IR daily since quite a few years for all my flight sims. I now have a TiR 5 after my TiR 4 died after several years of duty. Can't imagine to fly without now.
