I'll keep this as brief as possible but here's some background to illustrate my perspective (I hope).
I'm new to PC gaming (apart from playing on a BBC in '83, 84 Oh and I bought a PS3 a few years to play racing games but heh, it's a good blu ray player right?)
So I had a PC for recording and mixing down music (not cut and paste samples BTW just to be clear, guitars drums bass trumpets vocals. Real stuff). I loved Elite back then and in December 2013 I googled 'Elite Remake and stumbled upon the excellent open source version 'Oolite'. It was on the Oolite forums that I learned about Elite: Dangerous.
I paid into Premium Beta and bought a HOTAS. Bought a Delan Clip and sussed out curves on FaceTrackNoIR. I did my first ever PC build to play this game (not a bad build actually aside from the GPU from my old PC -pending).
So where I am now is:
I rarely play because I don't meet anyone (I'd like to for fun)
I've read up on the other iterations of Elite like Frontier First Encounters and I get the history of the Federation, Empire and Alliance (no Republic?) but I don't really care because it doesn't 'feel' relevant when I'm going to a USS that I know will appear eventually if I just wait or speed up or slow down or loop the loop in Super Cruise- ah there it is in the middle of nowhere a Black Box...
I'm kinda hoping that some members of these Forums may be able to give me a kick up the ass in the way of 'Let's do this, I'll meet you up at, and we'll try to..'
I want to play but every time I look at the 'PLAY' button it reminds me of when I pretended that I couldn't do up my shoe laces just to put off going to school for a few more minutes.
I want too feel involved. Shooting shit and selling shit isn't enough.
Thanks for listening Commanders.
Fly safe!
