While I love the approach I sort of miss the point there. In terms of ranking, a Vulture should do better

well my understanding of it - unconfirmed - is that the higher the challenge, the more 'score' you get for a kill, so i guess ultimately you'd rank up quickest in a Sidewinder

but as much as i love my Vulture, there's something more fulfilling about taking down an Anaconda in an Eagle. it took me a while to get the hang of it* and i took some bad damage a few times, but now i'm a bit better at it and really love the Eagle's agility


*when i first started in ED i sold my Freagle to use the cash, and from Sidewinder went to an Adder. it's only recently i've started playing with the Eagle and only in the past couple of days that i began using it for serious combat.

I think that may not be correct. If I remember from posts on the main forum, it is dependant on the level of the opposing player. If you are Master and kill a Novice, you get less credit than if you kill an elite. Regardless of ship. According to the wikia:

Within Combat there are multiple roles a commander can take, such as Assassin, Mercenary and Bounty Hunter. To increase ones combat rank one needs to kill other Ships, where killing higher-ranked pilots increases your rank faster.

Based on this, I would think it doesn't matter if you are in a Sidewinder or a Vulture, you need to kill X amount of ships, make X amount of credits, and make sure you are killing more ships above your rank than below to move up.
