I spent the last couple of evenings heading out into the unknown for the first real explore. You really do have to go some way before you find systems that haven't been scanned by someone else. Flew back in and sold that batch of data for about 3/4 million and it was nice to see the bonuses as first finder. Might head back out again..........

Hit 10,000 LY from home, but the journey has been much longer due to detours and sightseeing. The good ship Orphan Child looks like it needs a wash. At this rate it will still be a couple of weeks before I hit the centre of the galaxy.

Finally ranked up to Expert in the combat rankings. That took a while. Fighting in a turf war for the Imperials somewhere or other (possibly Salamandali?!). Anyway there's a Mobius Platform here where I'm picking up missions from the Imperials to off the enemy. Great fun.

I'm enemy to one faction, so they send out wings of small ships (Sideys, Eagles, Adders) to hunt me and only few pirates show up. This results in me defending myself more often than actually hunting. Can't do missions to up my rep with the enemy faction, as that faction "doesn't trust me enough" :D

That happened to me at Zaonce and I think it might have happened at wherever I am now. It's just time to move on when it happens...

On the plus side, I'm now allied with all three main factions.

ah, so that's what it was - i visited the RES in Jupiter of all places and did quite well but something was odd and it didn't twig until just now - no hordes of angry Sideys. those damn things always seem to wait until i've committed myself to battling an Anaconda and then spring out from behind some rock, and then boosting away like chickens

time to find a new neutral home, methinks

on topic, i've taken my Pyfen to do the Arro Kop/Perf Enhancers - Ededleen/Imperial Slaves run, 460k per round trip. dunno if that's good or bad for 220t and only one jump, but it makes a change from the RES. thanks to Nanosmo for posting that route.

The accepted measure for trading performance seems to be profit per tonne of cargo space per hour.

The reason it's not per tonne of cargo is the rares trading - you are unlikely to have a full hold, and empty space is wasted profit.

Do at least one full circuit of your trade run. Then, make a note of your credits when you take off with a full cargo load at any station. Start a stopwatch as you exit through the letterbox. Do your circuit of the trade run as normal. When you're back at that station sell, buy and leave. Stop the stopwatch as you exit through the letterbox and when you have sufficiently distanced yourself from the letterbox, make another note of your credit balance.

Divide 60mins by the time your circuit took. This gives you n which is the number of circuits per hour.
Subtract the first credit balance from the second to give C1 which is your total profit per circuit.
Divide C1 by your total cargo capacity to give Ct which is your profit per tonne (of space) per circuit.
Multiply Ct by n to give P your profit per tonne (of space) per hour.

This method accommodates both fuel scooping or fuel purchase, mixed non-rare cargos and empty cargo space caused by rare trading. A good trade route brings in a five-digit value for P. I used to think I was doing well if I got above 15,000 but I've heard there are routes now which bring in 25,000.

For bountyhunters:

Divide your prey with a clean cut of lasers, subtract the space police and multiply your profits with KWS ... stop to watch them enemies explode. This gives you an amount of fun per hour :D

Yeah - I should maybe have mentioned that I've abandoned the trade grind for RES farming. Much more fun and a satisfyingly higher risk if you're on a PvE server.
