Lesson #1 for noob scrub-lord explorers: do NOT investigate strong signals in deep space in your unarmed sidewinder - I went boom and lost two hours worth of scan data.
Lesson #2 for noob scrub-lord explorers: when heading out of a station, don't let the excitement of 'getting back out there' cloud your speed and orientation perception - you can go boom in a station too.
Lesson #3 for noob scrub-lord explorers: after getting killed (see Lesson #1), don't arm yourself and then go back out exploring without considering the change in jump distance and fuel consumption - which can screw you big time if you have to make two jumps into un-scoopable star systems.
Lesson #4 for noob scrub-lord explorers: learn how to use a basic scanner. HINT: bind it to a fire group and then SCAN systems when you enter them. It does not 'automagically' work when you enter a system just because it's installed in your ship.

I did a lot of research and sold my weapons, my cargo holds and upgraded my fsd, pd and installed a fuel scoop.
With upgrades, I'm at about 13ly jump capable and have gone about 150ly toward the core.
My plans are to circle around Sol at about a 400 ly radius until I accumulate enough credits to put on an advanced scanner and surface scanner, then head for the far side of the universe. I stop every 100 ly so far and sell my data - it's kind of slow going, but I'm enjoying it.
