I decided to do a surface mission where I should take out a power plant/generator.
Landed my Asp outside the security perimeter and went in with the SRV. After a few minutes SRV was blown to pieces.
Got me a new buggy in port and decided to change strategy, now I first wanted to blow up the turrets using my Asps beam lasers.
Asp got blown to pieces quickly.
Sulking the rest of the evening and took a stupid delivery mission to feel useful again.

I need to find out how to do it. Maybe I need a wing

Here's a video that shows a very good way to do ground assault missions.

I didn't want to build a Fed ship for it, and I thought it may be a bit more than is needed, so I refitted my Asp. This configuration is working quite well for me for ground assault missions.

The reason I picked the cannon is that it doesn't drain my capacitor. On my first group I have all the lasers with the warrant scanner, on the second group I use the two pulse lasers on trigger one and the cannon on trigger two.
I use the first group to take down shields and getting into a good firing position. Group two I use to take down bigger ships and to let the capacitor recharge.

It's lovely, it only takes 2 to 3 shots to complete take out the power plant. It's a bit annoying to lift the nose up to shoot the bottom gun, but you get used to it. The combination of the two plasmas is awesome, I had that for a long time and it does look epic.
