What I was saying is, the only way to level up a combat rank is to fight an enemy that is of equal or higher rank. So when you are in the slot below elite it gets harder and harder to find those skill levels in your opponents. Hence the really long wait to the top level.
I was grinding Trade Rank, not Combat. Only a novice in Combat rank, since I literally didn't fight anyone until a buggy patch in late December drove me to blood lust, and made me arm my Cutter. That being said, I am outfitting a Corvette to go murder pirates as I type this.

Grats Darr. You've kinda motivated me to continue my trade grind to Elite. About 40+% left.
But I'm still trying to even out my combat ranking. Just hit 25% Deadly, 75% more to go for Elite.
Going to take forever.
Glad my mad grind to Elite motivated someone! Seriously though, I hit Tycoon on 1 or 2 January, and it's 3 weeks later now. That's with being sick and with being busy IRL. It's not that bad if you keep on a great route. Lazy trading gets me 4-5% a day, so you can be done with that pretty fast I'd say! Grind that last 40% out!
The funny thing though is this.. I'm about to start trading again later tonight.. I have filled my hangar with some awesome ships, and now I want to properly outfit them. Re-converted the Cutter to max-trade.. Once I get done exploring with my Corvette, in the Sol system, I'll be heading back to the trade grind. I figure I need another.. oh 1.6 Billion.
I really am crazy it seems.
