One sure fire way to see if another player is in your instance is the bandwidth monitor (ctrl+b) But it's kind of immersion breaking.

You can also open up your chat menu and scroll once to the right. This will normally open up a menu through which you can send private messages to those on your friends list, but it will ALSO give you a list of ships in your instance that are player controlled (Any ship appearing above your friends list but without a name, i.e. "Vulture" "Asp" or "Anaconda".

I can take a screen shot of this to better illustrate, as I believe that most commanders are unaware of this feature.

Great tip, Boxcar! I hadn't thought of that.

I imagine that it may be difficult to remember these things, try to save your ship, take screenshots, and most importantly.... chat message the guy that you are not an NPC all in the few seconds that you may have before your hull is destroyed!

That's what pisses me off the most about this game. You can't enjoy the galaxy because of knuckledragging mouthbreathers who somehow think humanity's going to get past Mars in 1300 years - let alone develop FTL travel and learn how to terraform - by attacking one another for da lulz.

I was just about to write that. I keep a close eye on that other group and how they manage complaints, and with the exception of a few instances, they are quick to respond and do a decent job. At least now they do, they had a terrible reputation in dealing with it in the past.
