Colin, would the Anaconda be an upgrade from the Python? I am not sure I would make that jump if I planned any trading, since you lose access to outposts.
So, Last night I bought a Viper. I changed to an A-Rated FSD and Power Plant, C Shields, and D Everything Else.
I really like this ship for its speed, and it definitely has a better yaw rate than the Cobra. Yes, its not as maneuverable as my Vulture or an Eagle, but pretty fun. The first loadout I tried was 2 Medium Pulse Gimbals, and 2 Small Cannon Gimbals. Headed out to the Nav Beacon. I was quite impressed. Those cannons are quite nice, mind you all I had to shoot at were sidewinders and Adders. After shields go down, 2 double shots and both are gone.
Now, coming from a Vulture, having 2 C3 Pulse only, I was use to having my KWS on Trigger two. With the Viper I had the Pulses on Trigger One, and the Cannons on Two. The second fire group had the KWS on Trigger 2. Works fine. Till you forget to switch fire groups.
An Anaconda popped in and I turned to scan it. I targeted it, and it was so close I hit Trigger 2 to KWS at the same time. Imagine the look on my face, me in my little Viper, as the Two Cannons fire and hit dead on Target of this HUGE Anaconda in front of me, just as the scan finishes and I see "Clean" and worse "System Security" on the bottom left of my screen.
I panicked, Stow the weapons, Yell to Voice attack "POWER TO SYSTEMS AND ENGINES", Duck and Boost Boost Boost, and hit the Supercruise button. Then in Chat I see "I'm gonna melt you down" as the ship tells me we are under attack. I am Slow Charging the FSD as I watch my Shield rings going down like a Progress Bar in a Download. Then I started to see my Hull going down 5-10 at a time. I just get out of range of the Anaconda when I jump.
I throw the nose up to get out of the System plane and avoid any other ships, and hunt the system map and luckily find an Independent Station in the system, but its over 5K ls out. At this point I don't care. I keep heading up from the system plane and then move to the station. I get there without incident and pay off my fine. I returned to my main station, repair, and try another loadout.
So, two Medium Beams and 2 Small Multis, not hitting unscanned ships, and I like it, but not enough power to really use the beams. Head back and tried 2 Small PA's and 2 Medium Pulses. No matter what I tried, I could not lose all the systems when I deployed them, so I sold them and went back to 2 Medium Pulses, and 2 small Multis. Decided to keep the Viper after that.
Pros:
Good Speed
Decent Handling
Love the Engine sounds
Love the look of the ship.
Cons:
Power Management is an issue
Jump range is decent but small tank.
8T Cargo is a little low but good for rares
Horizontal cockpit view is ok, but vertical is restricted.
Conclusion: It's a keeper and may end up being the ship I use in Open since it's so cheap.
