At the moment I consider myself independent. I have no strong feelings one way or the other right now (I guess I need to read up on the lore since I haven't played the earlier Elite games). However I don't like slavery as a principle and I am operating in Empire space.

Talking about slaves: is there any way to free them?

A wanted hauler I killed dropped a canister of slaves, and rather than letting them die in space, I smuggled them into a station. But I could only sell them on the black market. Any other solution? Maybe I should have destroyed that canister to end their misery...

I only played the original Elite on the BBC aged 15 and don't remember much, if anything, about factions and although the above Lave Radio episode has enlightened me about this, it has not sunk in yet. I think in the future after my understanding sinks in I may pledge an allegiance to one of the factions. So far my leanings are away from the Federation but not so far as to be swayed.

OK, I'm an old fart but I never played Elite before this one. I know sweet FA about the lore/history, I have no idea what one group means over another. I've never played an MMO either so have no idea what chosing one over the other would mean. Someone will have to explain this to me like I'm a three year old.

Likewise. This DDA describes factions/reputation, but I still don´t see exactly the consequences for me. Since I haven´t read up all that much about the lore I think I´m starting out in the Independent lobby. Would be interesting to see how much one would have to balance my trading/whatever to remain Independent/neutral?

Oh they paid good money for the living slaves on the black market (a bit more than 5000 cr), but I'd rather have freed them, if I could.
