Re: What I like about the Viper Mk4

So it is a bit of an older post but I think I'll revive it to prevent double posting stuff.
I'm currently thinking of buying/flying either a Imp. Courier or a ViperMk4.

I am currently flying a ASP Explorer which serverd me well but I kinda dislike the looks of it.
Also I made the mistake of B-fitting it, so it is even more of a whale now... -.-

I bought both, Viper, and Courier, and tested them with stock equipment.
I preferably do planetary missions, anything from base stuff to collecting stuff. I love the landing stuff. :P
I like combat but kinda fear the rebuy cost of my ASP.
Checking with Coriolis, both are pretty similar, but the Courier seems a bit more combat oriented with stronger shields/agility but less cargo and way less hull and jump range.
Am I missing something? What can help me to decide x(

Edit: I made a screenshot of coriolis, comparing my ships.
Staubgame ASP X is my current, ASP X ... is with a rated stuff.

Since you say you prefer to do planetary, I would say that the Mk4 is the choice of the 2.

But can I throw a Wrench in the machinery?

One of the important things doing planetary is being able to see. Both of these have horrid cockpits for looking at the planet below you, unless you like to fly upside down (and I don't suggest doing much of that if the gravity is close or over 1.00 (trust me, been there done that, crashed many a ship as it fell out of the sky to hit hard).

I am going to suggest looking at a Keelback. 2 Medium and 2 small hardpoints, 3 utility slots, and if you keep the shields light then 64tonnes capacity. All this with a 23 light year range empty, 18 full. Example Build.

If being able to see down is not important, check out the Cobra Mk4. 56 tonnes, better shields, 1 more small hardpoint but you give up a utility slot. 20ly empty, 16 full. Example Build.

The A-Team, as a wing has probably done more time on planet surfaces than most and we have tried everything. In our opinion, the best ship for exploring planets, prospecting, salvage operations, and Skimmer killing is the Keelback. Best price/performance for doing that.

If you do base assaults, take the Courier. These are planet exploration machines.

Oh, and if you sell your Asp, you can have both a courier for Battle, and Viper/keelback/Cobra mk4 and switch as needed.

Last word, the Asp is not Ugly. The Type 9, now THAT is ugly. :P

Nah, don't plan on selling my ASP. :P
I'm mostly looking for a small versatile ship that is not as expensive as the ASP should I ahve to rebuy it.

I tried the diamondback Explorer as well, that one I also really liked. Just barely any internal compartments. :|
Somehow, it also feels like a poor mans ASP. But, as I am looking for something cheaper than my ASP, maybe that's the way to go.

I'll definetly look into the Keelback. That one skipped my radar as it is classed freighter.
Cobra I wasn't able to buy yet as I haven't found one yet. :D

Ah, The Cobra Mrk4 is available only to those who owned The Original Elite Dangerous and Bought Horizons just before it launched in December. Maybe that is why you can't find it.

The Keelback is more nimble than its numbers say. Good Ship. And a Tricycle Gear is better for landing on a Planet that the Asp's 4 gears by about 300 percent.

Now, that would explain that, indeed. I just got into the game 2 weeks ago.

And yes, the ASP often skips along the ground although it says I'm in the right alignment. Just doesn't set down.

Decided on the Courier for now. The Mk4 did have the better internals but was slow and sluggish.
Fell in love with the speed/manouverability of the courier.

Running like this once I got all parts:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_cour ... %20Courier

I am curious about how the torpedo launcher performs :)

My Courier looks like this.

I've been flying it a lot over the past couple of weeks because I'm on the verge of bankruptcy and don't want to risk my bigger ships, and I have to say despite not really liking it a couple of months ago when I first flew it, I love it now. I was running missions for a few days and screwing around on planets without any goals for the first time, I just had so much fun wasting time. I wanted to take it exploring but the lack of internals put me off a bit, so I'm back in my Clipper for now. Funny how after all that work getting a Cutter I went back to something so much smaller & cheaper and I'm enjoying myself more than ever.

I flew a Viper MkIV for about a week altogether in the two times I owned one, and I really didn't like it either time. I don't know how everyone's doing so well in combat, that thing feels like it's made of paper to me. I only made 56k in the Neits CG, and regretted buying it quite a bit. I think I sold it to help buy back a Clipper in the end.

I might have to try one. I kind of wanted to get one but on paper it just doesn't look like it's worth getting because there's always something that outclasses it.

Dude it is ugly, and I'll not hear a word against my bright red Type-9, Red Dwarf.
