Dont get me wrong guys, but the more information i get about windows 10 the more i think Win7 Ultimate was my last desktop windows. And that from a guys that runs a Lumia 930 and did buy a Surface Pro MK1.

Data-Security and Privavy Issues aside: the Upgrade will be free for the first year, so there is plenty of time to wait and see what happens and how things evolve. Also, most people dont know the times of old, but normaly u need to get most more complicated periphery (scanners, printers, cameras, etc) a 2nd time if u upgrade. Simply because stuff no longer gets supportet if its older than around 6 months or is incompatible with the new OS.
My System:
Intel i7 4790K @4,0 GHz
Gigabyte Z97 X Gaming 5
16 GB Team Group Inc. Extreme Series White DDR3@2800MHz
2x Gigabyte Geforce GTX 770 4GB (GV-N770OC-4GD) SLI
Samsung SSD 840 Evo 250 GB + Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB

Again- Microsoft doesn't own the peripherals, etc... it's up to the OEM's to update drivers and so forth for the latest operating systems- and Windows 10 was announced well over a year ago and the API's have been available ever since the announcement. They even publicly released the beta so that people had plenty of time to write drivers, etc.

I'm not "partial" to Microsoft as a company- I think some of their business practices tend to be rather questionable at times, personally- but I do know that a lot of users don't really understand the relationship the OEM's have to the customers and they tend to pawn off the issues to the operating system when it really has nothing to do with it. I've been keeping up with information technology for years, am multiplatform (including Mac) and I've observed the behavior. Unfortunately the business mantra has turned into "maximize profits, reduce overhead" (lather, rinse, repeat) which means OEM's now get lazy and write drivers for the current OS and then blame the OS later if there's an upgrade. Unfortunately it's a vicious cycle, because now the OEM's change products constantly then announce EOL (end of life) soon after expecting you to keep buying their peripherals, cards, etc. I think AMD and Nvidia are actually the most responsible ones out there because most of their drivers are backward compatible, even when they release new versions.

How to fix it- I don't know, but in the present day with companies aggressively pushing profits over people, I can only see it getting much worse before it gets better. (sorry if this seams bleak)

My son tried to install win 10 on his two year old Asus Rog gamer laptop. Win 10 crashed mid install saying his pc was incompatible?...

What win 10 didn't tell him was that it deleted the win 8.1 restore partition on his hard drive.

I know, I know, he should have backed up his pc, but we've formatted from the partition a few times so I thought no problem as we have the product key. Except the partition is now gone.

We had to order a new original OEM 8.1 from Asus for his pc. 45 quid lesson learned. At least now we have the OS on dvd like in the old days, and we won't be touching win 10 till spring next year.

That sucks. But Order on DVD??? They don't have an ISO download you could get and make a bootable UBS drive? How archaic. You would think Asus would be a little further along that that.

My next PC will not have a DVD drive, and maybe not even a Spinning Hard Drive. A Blue-ray Drive I could see, but not a DVD. you can now get a UBS Flash Drive in 64gb size for less than the cost of 10 DVD blanks here. I really think Spinning drives will not be around much longer.

Last four weeks when I look at my Windows Update History I see a continuous column of Win 10 upgrade 'Failed'. Don't know why. All the drivers are up to date. My first home built rig but it's been working fine since last October.

Mobo ASUS Z87-K, CPU - Intel 4th Gen i5 4660 3.2 GHz, GPU ASUS GTX 970 SRIX, Memory - 8GB DDR3.
Peripherals, AKAI EIE PRO USB Sound Interface, Sony PS Eye (for head tracking with FaceTrackNoIR and a Head Mounted Infra Red L.E.D.), Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS, Mad Catz Wireless PS3 Controller, Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse.

I can't see other programmes delaying the update. Cakewalk Sonar X3 Producer is Win 10 ready but I have some Open Source VR software like Trinus VR and Moonlight.

Do Microsoft delay the update if the PC has software that may not be compatible?

Nope. They don't check, and don't care. They have an update, and they throw it out.

As far as the failures, I want into a streak of those before I ditched Windows 10. I googled and it seems that there is an issue if you shut down as it is downloading, it marks it as a failure.

I agree. The OEM is attached directly to the machine, so I gather if it had been a machine without disc drive it would have been an ISO download.

Spinning hard drives and disc drives are on notice. :) And we have a ps3 for blu ray, but netflix high def is catching up.

Things keep moving forward. :) (still love the video and audio from blu ray mind.)

On a side note, Asus support told me they were getting a lot of heat now, as win10 deletes the original restore partition without informing of this. Apparently we're not the only ones who relied on this option. Windows (MS) support didn't give a flying f***.

Bought a handful of USB sticks to backup every single pc in the house (more than I care to admit). Live and learn, eh? :)
