That's what I was doing in BD+28 413, core mining in a Python. It was LFT 65 I went to yesterday and I tried some Tritium mining in a Conda but I wasn't thrilled so won't go back, just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I think Python is king for core mining, boring and predictable but king.
I don't think laser mining LTD (or Painite) is better than core mining VO but I also don't think VO is the best choice either. However, I do think, "yes you should try it out" so you have some valid experience to form your own opinions.

Laser asteroids are client side and core asteroids are server side. If the player base is 10K persons then all 10K can laser the exact same rock successfully roughly every 2 hours. But if one person splits a core asteroid it will disappear for all 10K users for roughly 6 days before it reappears.
So in core mining the best practice is to avoid any area where commanders have already mined, including yourself.
For laser mining you are not competing for raw resources but for LTD specifically (but not Painite) you are competing for price. And the same situation applies, you are at a disadvantage following prices, ideally you need to be the one leading. Depending on when you can play and demand, prices may be driven into the ground within a few hours, or less.
