Rolling Stones Challenge.

Postby Jeffers2112 » Wed Jun 03, 2015 10:44 am

As an oldie, I had a thought on my way out into the distant reaches of the Galaxy....
I remembered the old Rolling Stones song and this quote from it -
"It's so sad and lonely, I'm 10,000 light years from home"
And I thought to myself, let's see how near to 10k ly from Sol I can get?
This is my latest effort - pretty close.

But can anyone do better? Just a bit of fun, something for you to think about on your way to (or from) home....

UPDATE! As someone has kindly pointed out, the song only gets as far as 2,000 light years from home, I've remembered it wrong.
The poor old brain cells are letting me down again.
On the bright side. it's easier to get to 2,000 than it is 10,000.... I'll try that on my way back!

Your memory may be fading somewhat!
There was no mention ever in the song of being sad.
And the distances in the song were 100, 600, 1000 and finally 2000 light years from home - never 10,000.

"It's so very lonely. You're 2,000 light years from home."

I suggested this to a friend 4 months ago, and he made the following video:

You're quite right! He gets lonely but not sad, and I've got the distance wrong too (hangs head in shame.......)

I've amended my original post....

I'll just go and stand in the corner now....

P.S. nice video....

If you feel like a bigger challenge, Star Trek: Voyager would be 70,000! :)

I wonder if it's possible to get that far from Sol without leaving the galaxy? If it's around 26k to the centre then diametrically opposite is around 52k. Can you get another 18k out?

My question is what's outside the Galaxy and can you get there

Intergalactic travel is not possible. You'll be able to supercruise for ages without going anywhere, but you won't be able to jump.
