Greetings all! O7
If you have read my "greetings!" over on FirstGreatExpedition,

it's not your imagination, but these are pretty much the same post. BUT please read this one section before just skipping ahead -
[PLEASE READ]
I'm really excited to be here. Griefers are a pain to me. I just don't have the patience for them. So to have a "private" instance, or whatever it's called in this game, that really LIMITS that and ENFORCES against it, is great. Now, long term, I may go "hunting" in Open when the mood suits me. What can I say, I was inspired by Isinona. But I'm so happy that exists. Also, through my weeks of research, time and again, this forum seemed the most optimistic in its critiques of the game, in its beliefs that the game WILL get even better, that like EVE it will take time to mature (I remember EVE in 2004), and that as a community we can help make it happen.
I found ElitePVE through FirstGreatExpedition, and through this, I found Inara, Coriolis, Edshipyard, and an untold number of youtube videos and ideas on how to play this game. I just started and I feel like I genuinely know what I'm doing and that's a great feeling and already I feel a tremendous amount of accomplishment. For example - flight assist off, once I got my deadzones dialed in, I flew all the non-combat missions in the tutorials last night without dying. Yeah, I bumped a few bulkheads, but I would have been exponentially lost if it hadn't been for this forum and group.
[End of Pleading]
So I first heard about Elite Dangerous when I was researching the new Gog updates for X-Wing. Besides IL-2:1946, that's pretty much the last flight-sim I've played. In one review of how great those games still are, the writer talked about how it's taken nearly 20 years to replicate it with Elite Dangerous. He then went on to compare ED to X-Wing. I was immediately interested in finding out about ED. I saw he reviewed the game and that it should be forewarned people should do research before just "jumping in."
That was about three weeks ago.
During my initial research, I found a wonderful review of ED and this group, on Kotaku. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it:

I'm a veteran of the US Coast Guard. I was a Ship's Quartermaster and learned about azimuths, celestial navigation, the constellations, and ways of telling time out in sea with nothing to go on but our stars and our path around and among them.
To find out ED replicated this to the best of their knowledge, I was immediately enamored.
I then saw some youtube videos and noticed how we actually get to FLY and DOCK and all those great challenges, let alone the usual mix of pirates, smugglers, traders, cops, and bounty hunters. I was HOOKED.
Long story short - two days ago I picked up my custom PC from a friend who built it a few years back and it's "outdated" now for him. He works in post-editing and special effects. Apparently a
i7 - 3.2ghz
24 GB RAM DDR3
and GTX 560 Ti
are an "outdated dinosaur" and gave me one heck of a deal. He now has a system with three titans onboard and "gobs more" of RAM. LORD.
I flew all the tutorials last night. We were having internet issues where our speeds were down to 1mb/s... yep. But hey, at least the tutorials still worked out right. So me and my "Co-pilot," my 4 year old daughter, could at least fly a bit. I'm so excited.
My plans are to trade to make funds, run some rare routes, and my main goal:
explore all known systems according to http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/ and particularly -
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/Nav_Star_Chart.php
I've always had a soft spot for Orion, I can't wait to actually "sail" there with RadioSidewinder playing in the background.
My flight controls profile is a dual joystick setup (no pedals) that I think works rather wonderfully. It was a "happy accident" in what happened. Fry's Electronics didn't have an additional Logitech 3D Pro, so I bought a Speedlink Phantom Hawk as my right stick. It was serendipitous and for once luck truly shined on me. My left stick (The 3Dpro) is my throttle and has all throttle/thruster controls and "shift" keys. My right stick (the Hawk) is my main stick with interfacing via the shift keys.
if anyone would like to know my profile, I have it saved in a doc and I'm currently working on a picture of it as well with the two sticks shown like others I have found.
I also am putting this in as my official spot to volunteer in any way I can for the expedition once it gets underway. As a "resume" of sorts, I've already made some routes for rares, and other trips I'll happily share both here, FirstGreatExpedition, and my blog. I swore I wouldn't go to hardcore, and yet before I even bought the game or tried it out, I had my Cobra, Hauler, Adder, Viper, Python, and Diamondback Explorer all kitted out on edshipyard.com/coriolis.io and routes made and saved in spreadsheets.
For example, my first "expedition" is going to be going to LHS 3006 to pay my respects at Leonard Nimoy Station. The route was already planned out before I had even purchased the game!
I'm IRL in USA, Arizona GMT -7/-6 (depends on daylight savings)
I'm going to usually be on 19:00 - 24:00 Galactic Standard Times however regardless. Until I get my ships and credits squared away I'll mainly be on the Mobius "instance."
My main forums I'll be participating in are of course, here, RadioSidewinder, and firstgreatexpedtion.org.
can't wait to see some of you out there in the black!
TLDR - I'm excited to be here, and hopefully I'm not too "noobish" since I've done so much research already!
Coming from a luddite, cynical, grumpy vet that was convinced to go PC after being so disappointed and returning an XboxONE instead of just giving up on gaming, because of a dear friend, and because of this game and this community, THANK YOU. YOU, this community, is why I am here in this game. You convinced me that any and all challenges are easily met and can be dealt with. Especially ones I made up in my head. I'm happy to say because of this, I have had zero issues with the game at all so far.
