I have been looking at the ships, and some of the Empire ships look very nice. I agree, it's great that you have so much freedom in this game. I didn't want to go down a route that may limit me later on.
Imperial slave trading in Empire space can be VERY profitable, and it's completely legal in most systems. Buying/selling them is illegal in some systems, but that never impacted my ability to make millions of credits moving them from point A to point B.
There really isn't an activity / path in the game that will limit you from doing anything else that you want to do. The only possible one that I can think of would be getting involved in Power Play as it makes travel in opposing systems more challenging (many more interdictions) but it's still doable.
