Super noob saying hi

Postby d4eaming » Sun Aug 27, 2017 1:00 pm

Hi guys. I just picked up the game, and only got in yesterday for a few hours because my internet was being dumb. Then I got to spend forever in the training missions because the game didn't like my controller, so I switched to a different controller- of the same type- and suddenly, it likes that one! But no keybindings worked, so even though all the bindings matched the buttons in the binding options, nothing worked until I went through and reset every single one of them.

I think I spent an hour in that training mission on how to undock just trying to figure out how the hell to raise my landing gear. Thank you, Frontier, for your training missions so I could figure this out before actually being out in the game where I'd probably die super quick. Training- do it for no other reason than to find out if your controller is crap.

Anyway, now that stuff actually works, I can play the game. What very small amount of it I have experienced so far is beautiful. And I like the 1:1 approach they have taken, even using lightyears as their measurement (and lm and ls), instead of squishing everything down into unrealistic distances like most space games.

But anyway, this is all boring and you probably already know all of it. I've already applied to the private group and I am looking forward to a game where I can relax and enjoy the wondrousness of the galaxy. I played hundreds of hours in X2, which had a somewhat similar focus and gameplay, albeit broken up into sectors instead of "open world", and it's exciting to finally find something to scratch that particular itch.

So, hi! This is a lot of rambling so I'm gonna go now, bye!

Welcome commander, hopefully you'll be allowed quickly into Mobius so you can meet up with some like minded players. The game has a steep learning curve and it took me about a week before things I did in the game actually represented itself as credits or reputation. But keep at it, it will pay of handsomely in the end.

If you're playing on the PC you can add me, I go by the name Mobediah Jones, if you got any questions or need assistance of any kind. Other than that, this forum will always be ready to help you out if you got any problems.

Oh god, that's great.

I've been fined about 6 times at just one station now. "Loitering" because I was going too slow so I didn't crash into everything and I needed to orient myself after nearly wrecking some other poor dude in a head on collision (at least he was paying attention and got out of the way, I was looking at panels). Another loitering for again slowing approach through the mailslot.

Loitering at my assigned landing pad! I guess yaw is too slow for them- gear was out and I was in the right place, just needed to spin around. Nope, loitering. WTF.

Trespassing after failing to dock- at the same space station, natch- in the right place, landing gear down, at the right pad (was not my first docking attempt), but it would not initiate dock. I spun in circles until the countdown ended, the landing pad was glowing blue in my HUD. Maybe I was just too slow again to turn around, but I had to gtfo the station in 30 seconds, wait, and ask permission to dock again (worked that time :?: ).

Boost into walls instead of raising landing gear. Boost into station instead of lowering landing gear. Remapped that sh :!:

I took a mission that was actually impossible for me to complete because I could not jump that far and there were no viable routes between. Had no idea about that restriction, but it's good info to have now. However. I had to abandon the mission. Which left my cargo labeled stolen. I dumped that into said aforementioned station that kept fining me for loitering, lols.

And then! A few seconds from dropping out of supercruise to reach my destination, someone attempted to interdict me. Somehow, and I have no idea how, I managed to "win" the minigame thing and resist interdiction. This was in Dahan, next to the system I started in, which I assume is within the safer "bubble" in Open. I had no cargo, no missions, nothing at all but the rental sidewinder, so if they just wanted to kill me it would have been annoying but not a huge deal. And that minigame is hard as hell on a gamepad, ugh.

I have concluded I would be terrible at space IRL and would have died already.

Hello and welcome to the group Commander d4eaming.

I managed to get in and out station with no problem, maybe due to my early years in Elite. Although you did not actually control the outgoing and never actually saw the inside of a station. You still had to line up with the mail slot and rotate while moving forwards. But wow the navigation to get to the a station had me pulling my hair out.

Ok I have a massive bad habit of not reading instructions, however I remember thinking, ok I got this. I then went zipping past the station at a zillion miles an hour. Ok turn around, same again. Right next time I am going slow and make sure everything is right. I was 10 flipping minutes crawling along, what the Hell this can't be right, bit more power I think.... <push> ..... Zip past the station at a zillion miles an hour, and that went on for a while. Funny how many things that once seemed hard became easy.

Its easy to forget how steep a learning curve it really is. Funny video Tor, enjoyed it. :D

You have your answer why you are "terrible" ^^

I remember when i started, without HOTAS. It was crazy hard to fly in, remember the key binds for vertical thruster, landing gear.. just slowing down to the pad was tough..
I spent my first landing attempts scrolling through the controls options trying to find what i needed.

I am actually amazed that people manage to play ED on console (well, besides 2D platform games, i can't play anything with a pad ^^)

That said, would gladly fly along if you're on PC :) maybe help on bounty hunting just to get rid of your sidewinder !

I am on PC, just can't afford a flight stick right now, though it's on my list. I used to have one but it got lost in moving shuffles over the years. It's getting much easier, but, I have moved up in the world now (slightly) and have an Adder and a docking computer. Saves so much time letting the ship dock itself, since I'm not running anything illegal that I'd need to avoid getting scanned for. It would certainly be easier with a flight stick, however. And I might even be willing to hunt down pirates or dirty NPCs if I had one XD No way would I ever be able to dogfight with a gamepad.

At the moment, it's just data and commodities runs, but after some upgrading, I've gotten some goods runs in the 150k cr range, and if I'm lucky, I can grab multiple missions for the same destination system or make a stop along the way. I'm getting the hang of it piece by piece.

the good thing with the wing system is that you only need to "poke" an ennemy vessel, and once your mates destroy it for you you got the same share of the bounty ^^
it is very handy to help new players make some money.
Don't hesitate to add me in game (Le Doyen) if you ever need, or just for fun what the heck :)
