Greetings and Salutations

Postby Loss Mentality » Sat Sep 10, 2016 2:28 am

Hello -

Thanks for allowing me into your group.

I've owned the game for well over a year but had, until a few weeks ago, only played a few times for a total of a maybe 4 hours. It looked great and was the type of thing I should like, but I had a hard time getting into it - maybe because of the long periods of simple travel. I was disappointed because most of this game is right up my alley, but I just couldn't.... quite.... get... there.

Then two or three weeks ago, I finally got around to trying Elite in VR, and wow, travel was no longer boring (not that I go searching for flights to 100,000 LS-distant system bodies, mind you), and everything else was spectacular. In addition, operating the ship, and being able to easily look around, is much more natural.

Now, I can't imagine (and won't be ever again) playing the game without VR.

So here I am. Until Mobius, I've only played in solo (a decision made after reading various accounts of various incidents involving a certain type of player in open), and have yet to see another human in the two days since I joined Mobius - but I hope to see one of you soon. I'm currently hanging around H Draconis, bouncing around nearby systems, doing missions for Federal-aligned minor factions to increase my rep with them and gain Fed rank (I'm currently a cadet and at 50% of the next rank).

I wouldn't mind some winged-up combat/bounty hunting once I get my next ship, which will probably be a Vulture. I currently have an Asp, which I've fought in, but would like to specialize a bit before I really get into it. I did some bounty hunting in a Viper, but sold it.

I plan on some occasional PvP someday, too, as I'm not against it, but think it should be between two consenting players; I have zero desire to get blown up by some random group of winged-up players with numbers, ships and experience beyond mine, all while in the midst of trying to accomplish a mission or trade run. That said, I hope I could survive most such encounters, as I've learned how to submit and high/low wake when needed, and it appears that any aggressors near stations get killed by station defenses quickly (or am I wrong on that when it comes to CMDRs?). That still leaves planetary landings as problematic, I guess, in terms of encountering malevolent players.

Of course, if I ever PvP while in Mobius, it would only be in a Conflict Zone, and I'd follow the stated Mobius CZ PvP policy. Yeah, yeah, I read about what the SDC did here - thumbs down (though as an aside, it's fascinating that occurrences in game worlds now generate articles in the gaming media). But I doubt my focus in Elite will ever be PvP, as I've never been a big PvP person - co-op is more my style (except MechWarrior Online - love that one), so I'm looking forward to multi-crew, despite being skeptical of just how useful/fun/good it might be.

Anyway, ultimate goal (for now): Corvette, with stops for a Type 7 and Python along the way, maybe. Want to outfit the Asp for some deep exploring, too. And maybe a Type 9 at some point. Who knows? Oh, I currently am in possiession of a Type 6, as well - it sas the best way to make money until I got the feel for raising rep with minor factions to unlock higher pay missions.

I hope to soon hunt up some Engineers, too, though I've from what I've read, it seems like it might be a grind fest at this point. Maybe when the next update comes in October (I think?).

And that's plenty about me. I look forward to learning about you.

Best,
CMDR Kragg Relluf (Jeff)

Greetings and welcome to Mobius, Commander

Please feel free to add your name to one of our 'In game friends lists'

In game friends list for PC
Xbox EU and
Xbox US

and check out our TeamSpeak servers or Discord (voice and text chat) servers to easily chat with, and possibly wing up with other commanders.

Also, make sure to check the Policy page if you haven't already Image.

On top of all of that, we also have a Facebook group and Twitter feed.

There is a lot of great info on the message board, and we have compiled a long list of Tips and Tricks to help new players acclimatize to the game while having fun.

Finally, if you are interested in being involved, go here to see information about our player group faction, the Order of Mobius (based at Rafferty's Mobius station in the Azrael system). We have our own Order of Mobius Twitter feed.

Just as a quick aside, I have removed your 'test' post. When joining the site the firsts few posts you make are approved by a moderator and may take a short while to be sorted :)

Welcome to the group, commander Kragg Relluf. Glad you found us. :)

Which VR HMD did you get? I purchased a Vive a couple of months ago, and .... oh.... my.... God. It's amazing! Love that thing! Definitely a game changer.

I do quite a bit of bounty hunting so when you're ready to wing up drop me a line. I'd be happy to kill some baddies with you.

Thanks, JohnLuke. I'll definitely look you up when I'm ready.

What Vive games do you have? Maybe we could play sometime. Hordez, Raw Data, Onward, been thinking about getting more into Hover Junkers myself.

I actually have both Vive and Rift, though not really intentionally. I initially pre-ordered the Rift, but quickly decided I wanted the Vive because of room scale and motion controllers (I hadn't really been aware of it until after Rift pre-order, as I hadn't followed VR more closely than needed to know the pre-order date of the Rift). After switching, I SWEAR I cancelled by rift order, but I must not have pushed a final web page button or something when doing so (probably got distracted - you know, simple minds, simple things), because a few weeks after getting the Vive in may, I got a shipping notification for the Rift. Oops!! I considered sending it back, but once it got here, I just HAD to open it and try it out, as I was intensely curious about it after using the Vive.

After trying several Rift games, though, I concluded that motion control and room scale are, at least for me (I won't speak for others, though I'm sure many feel the same), essential to VR, with motion control being the most important, as room scale's vitalness varies with the game. In short, if I a VR game doesn't have motion controls, I tend to not try it, with the exception of piloting/driving games, of which I've currently only tried Elite, though will certainly do others in the future.

Now, my usage breaks down as follows. I have the Vive Lighthouses set up in my great room, where I use them for all VR games that aren't driving/piloting. When I want to use the computer for something besides Vive games, I move my PC from my living room to my computer room - it's on a cart with a monitor and keyboard attached via swivel arms, so it takes only a minute to move and plug into the monitors on my desk - where I use the Rift to play Elite (or any future piloting driving game that I may play). Then I don't have to move the Vive Lighthouses. I should also say, that before really thinking about this system, I knew I'd try Elite on Rift because I'd read about the problems it had with Vive. Why concern myself with that when I was lucky (foolish?) enough to have a Rift sitting there gathering dust?

So in short, the rift right now is simply a convenience for me, as it can't - again IMHO - stand next to the Vive for any other type of game besides those in which you pilot. That said, I do fell it's important to point out that as someone who has used both, I expect that when Touch comes out, the two will likely be on even footing, at least in my mind, as I see not too much difference between the HMDs themselves - some, yes, as both have slight pros/cons in different areas, but not much. Touch price has leaked now, too, and IF that price is right, the cost of Rift plus touch appears to be about the same (leaked price $225, so Rift + touch about$ 25 bucks more).

I haven't spent much time yet trying other Vive games. My wife and I enjoy the quick games in The Lab, and Portal VR. I'll take a look at the titles you mentioned when I get a few minutes. :)
