A bit lost

Postby M. Kowalsky » Mon Feb 09, 2015 4:20 pm

Hi, Matt Kowaslky here (yeah, I know, but I had to put Commander Jameson to rest!),

Just got my spanking new Sidewinder and still learning my yaw from my roll and my thrust from my boosts, I thought I'd give Mobius a try, but I'm afraid I must have misunderstood something, either on how the game works or how the group works.

I thought the whole idea of this private group was to be able to enjoy a bit of quiet space. Yet, I've been attacked by one or maybe two CMDR, I'm not sure as it happened so fast, and I couldn't find a combat log afterwards to figure out what exactly happened.

Are there any circumstances by which attacking another player is acceptable when playing in the group?
I was in an unexplored (by me of course) system which was marked as "Anarchy". Maybe that makes it OK?

Or, maybe I was attacked by an NPC pirate. But would they engage in almost convincingly human interaction on the chat system?
If those were NPCs, they don't seem a very patient bunch because I didn't even have time to blurt out a reply on the chat before they started opening fire

I was just starting, so really it's no big deal, but I'd rather know upfront if I misunderstood this group's policy.

Hello and welcome, Commander!

NPC's will attack you in the group like they will in Open or in Solo. The way to distinguish them is that players appear as hollow shapes in the scanner (triangles when hardpoints are deployed or rectangles when they aren't), while NPC's appear as solid shapes. Also players have CMDR displayed in front of their names and NPC's don't.

The only circumstance when PvP is allowed in the group is in conflict zones. See the Policy link at the top of the pages for more details. And yes, NPC's will text you on the comms.

Enjoy the group and fly safe!

Hmm, I really think there was a CMDR in front of that rascal's name but I did not have time to figure out if the shapes on the scanner were hollow or not.
How can one tell if I stumble in a conflict zone, especially as that system (Ross142) was marked as unexplored on my charts.

Also, is there a way to see the chat log?

Are you sure you were in the group and not in Open? Anyway, it may happen that people ask to join the group but don't respect its rules. If you're attacked by such a player, try to make a screenshot showing its name (can be a screenshot of the contacts tab in the left panel or a screenshot of the screen that says "your ship was destroyed by xxx") and PM admins or mods here, attaching that screenshot. This player will then been dealt with. The key to make a screenshot is F10, BTW.

Conflict zones are marked on the navigation tab of the left panel ("High Intensity Conflict Zone" or "Low Intensity Conflict Zone"). You can hardy find yourself in one by accident, because you have to target one and exit supercruise to be in it.

To see the chat log, you can press the 2 key (default key to open the comms window). That will show the last few lines in the chat.

Yeah they were more than likely an NPC ship. Especially if they sent some degrading chatter, something like "Prepare to die!" or "Your mine now!". And depending on the ship they have compared to yours they may be able to easily interdict you. I don't even bother trying to lose the interdiction when I'm in my T6, I just slow to neutral to submit, then start turbo out of there with engines 4 full pips, 2 shields. Don't even bother with weapons ever, because I don't have any.

Look for outline squares or triangles on your radar, mostly squares though. All the solids are NPC and there are usually many of them. I think I've seen 1 other player in 3 days (but I'm also on a strange times and we all won't be in the same populated areas unless we go to Leetsi or Lave).

Oh and btw, welcome! I won't shoot you if I see you flying around. I'll also try to say "hi" but sometimes the communication itself is hit or miss for now (and will hopefully get better with Wings).

Thanks for the tips guys.
I'll put this one down to inexperience and will give it another try, and next time I'll try to grab a screenshot.

BTW, I'm 100% certain I was in the group, that I thought of checking after the adrenaline receded.
And it wasn't an interdiction: I was simply maneuvering in space, possibly near a hidden (pirate?) station. I can't be sure because the system was marked as unexplored and nothing appeared on my charts, but I thought there was something strange in that area. Never saw it though :)
The worst bit is that he didn't actually kill me. He let me go with 4% hull, a massive hole in my canopy, taking out 90% of the HUD, and 5mn left of O2. I managed to crawl back to Evarate after 2 jumps on oxygen supply to eventually have to abandon ship for the life capsule about 500m from a station :(
Pity I got out of SC on the wrong side of the station. With a bit more luck I could have made it back safely.

Hey there,

Is there a particular cluster in the galaxy where some at least, if not most people in the group hang-out ?
I've started in LHS3447 but want to learn my trade in the Empire, so I've started a long trek to the nearest Empire settlement I could find...

I'm doing a good Empire trading run around the Zelano / Apam Napat / Kured systems; but I will admit it is very much devoid of other players. Sometimes the NPCs will do something that almost looks like a player, like some faster than normal landing or shoot out from the station and I double check my radar because I think its a player but instead its just all solid colors. :|

I'm also sure you can find a large contingent of other Mobius group players over in the areas where Rare Trade runs are good, like Leesti or Lave.
