Greetings fellow Commanders - CMDR Lokathon signing on 8-)

Was playing Elite back in '85 on my C64 and am thrilled about the revival of this excellent game. Still a newbie at E:D but have managed to buy an Adder and beginning to get my bearings. A bit tired of being shot out of the sky by wolfpacks of pirates so I'll give it a go here.
Be careful out there :)

CMDR toastyhamster here.
Originally played up to Deadly level twice, once on trusty 48k Speccy, secondly on a 128k Speccy. Never played Frontier but I remember playing Privateer (and Wing Commander). Currently running a T7 running trades/empire missions (currently Lord) waiting with cash in the bank for a Clipper. Also got a maxed Cobra which I've kept hold of for the assassination rank missions.
What I DO need is an update to my 4 year old Alienware laptop, FPS maxes at 20 :-(

Hi folks. I don't have the game yet but was doing some research on the game and it's PVE component. I had always been under the impression that this game was 100% forced PVP, so being a PVEer it was never really something that I wanted to waste my time on. By the grace of all good things, I found this group. I do have a couple of questions if you guys could help me out.

How does PVP/PVE work in this game? PVP can be outright avoided?
    Are you guys a "guild"?

Thank you all for your time.

It isn't like WoW, where you have a different servers - some PVE and some PVP. A guild in WoW is a group within a server - you still see people outside of your guild who are on the server. In E:D, there is just one server but you don't see anyone outside of the private group.

In case you're not familiar with the mechanics of how the different play modes work...

The game has 3 modes:
- Open Play
- Private Groups
- Solo

All three modes share the same game world but each controls who you encounter while playing. With solo, you see no one. In Open, you see everyone who is not playing Solo or is in a private group. Open is the normal "PVP" mode. In a private group, you only see members of that group - you don't see anyone playing Solo or Open.

While in Mobius, you are capable of attacking other players, but the group is made up of people who choose not to (outside of warzones), so you'll only be seeing people who also choose not to PVP. You can read more about the policy here:

page/policy

Regardless of the mode you use, you'll see the effects of other people's activities in the game world. For example, if you are trading at a specific system while playing Solo, supply and demand is affected by other players trading in the same system in Open Play and private groups, even though you won't encounter them personally.

Thank you Mobius and Amun-Ra, that clears up a ton.
