Though it hurts me to say it, that Federation Corvette does look sweet.

Really? My first thought on the Corvette was man that multi-person cockpit looks small for such a big ship, maybe it will look better when you see it to scale or are inside it.

The cockpit actually looks like it comes away, would be nice if the whole ship was too big to land at a station, so you had to fly the command module in.

Carrying a shuttle and using it to dock would seem more rational. :)

True, but I could imagine a situation where the command module had the functionality of a small fighter, good for say fighting in asteroid fields, but then you dock in the main ship and become a massive battle cruiser for attacking, say, capitol ships.

The full ship is powerful but slow and has poor manoeuvrability, the command module is fast and manoeuvrable (limited cargo space and no FSD), but only has a tiny fraction of the power.

Not rational, but fun :D
